Amex Gives 3 Extra Months for Welcome Bonus Spending Requirement

American Express is making it easier for new cardholders to earn their welcome bonuses. The credit card issuer is extending the spending period for those who have signed up recently for a card with a welcome bonus. It also applies to new application during the next two months. The extension is due to the coronavirus outbreak that has caused a decline in spending for most people. Looks like upgrade bonuses will not get this extension.

This extension if for cards approved between December 1, 2019, and May 31, 2920 for which you are eligible for a welcome offer. It applies to both personal and business credit cards issued by American Express.

Here is the notice that is showing up for some during the application process:

Conclusion

With many people self isolating right now, it has become more difficult to spend huge amount within a shot period of time. So the extra 3 months will surely be helpful, especially for some bonuses that have a large spending requirement.

  1. How about the welcome offers from Chase. Has anyone had any success in getting Chase to extend the welcome offer 3-month period for new cardholders (including business cards)?

  2. I have had numerous AMEX accounts since 1975 and have incurred many thousands of dollars in annual fees! On March 31, 2020 (one day before many DELTA bonus miles offers were due to expire) I phoned AMEX and requested to be upgraded to the “NEW LAUNCH OFFER” PLATINUM SKY MILES CARD of 100,000 miles after $3,000 in spend within 3 months rather than the “SPECIAL OFFER FOR YOU” of 40,000 miles after the same $3,000 in spend within the same 3 months. After two attempts and two transfers from reps outside the U.S., I spoke with “Alicia” in Fort Lauderdale FL. During our 20 minute conversation, I explained that I was a 45 year member, had spent many thousands of dollars on many types of AMEX cards and considered the “SPECIAL OFFER FOR YOU” to be both counter productive and insulting not only to me but to ALL CARDMEMBERS who had similarly long memberships. Part of my request was to ONLY receive the bonus miles and incur the $250 annual fee AFTER I met the spend requirement. I had canceled ONE upcoming journey, another was pending, and was unsure if I could otherwise meet the $3,000 spend requirement. (I was not going to pay the $250 annual fee if I was not going to receive 100,000 bonus miles) Alicia said she would forward my request to a supervisor also in Fort Lauderdale named “Ms Bennett”. Alicia also said I would receive an e-mail or phone response within 48 hours. I ended the call at 10:30AM EDT. Forty eight hours from that time was today April 2, 10:30AM EDT. It is now 11:50AM EDT and not only did I NOT receive a response from ANYONE at AMEX but I have just learned that today (ONE DAY AFTER the DELTA offer of 100,000 bonus miles ENDED) AMEX announced that bonus miles offers have been EXTENDED by THREE MONTHS. Had I known this extension would take place, I could have submitted an application (with probable approvement) and most likely would meet the $3,000 spend requirement now that I have six months to accomplish this task. The timing of this AMEX announcement is HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS. Has anyone else experienced similar dis-service?
