American Offer For Your Cell Phone Bill
American Express has released a new Amex Offer giving $10 back when you pay $75 or more towards your cell phone bill. Unfortunately this offer is only available through the American Express website and seems to be highly targeted.
The Offer
Get a $10 credit when you use your enrolled American Express card to make a $75 or more payment at: AT&T, Spring, T-Mobile, US Cellular or Verizon. Each enrolled card can receive the credit up to 3x.
Terms
Limit 3 statement credits per American Express online account. Enrollment limited. Offer is non-transferable. In order to be eligible for the offer: (i)you must enroll your Card by April 14, 2015, (ii) you must use that same Card to pay your cell phone bill online for the brands listed in this offer directly at the listed merchants’ website and (iii) your payment with that Card must be made in a single transaction of $75 or more and be completed by July 15, 2015. Payments for prepaid cell phone purchases, plans or services do not qualify. Payments made via phone or at retail locations do not qualify. Payments for brands other than those listed do not qualify.
Analysis
Currently I use my Chase Ink card to automatically pay my cell phone bill since it earns 5x Ultimate Rewards points at cell phone providers. Since this deal offers a 13.33% discount, I plan to switch my spending over to my enrolled American Express cards.
I will probably take my account off of easy-pay and make payments in $75 chunks over the next couple of months. Unfortunately only two of my family’s cards were targeted, so I will only be able to get six credits total. Either way, a 13.33% discount beats out the 5x points on the Ink and I still earn rewards for the purchases on my Amex card as well.
Conclusion
This is a great deal for those who were targeted, although I wish it were more widely available. Were you targeted? On how many cards? Let me know in the comments!

Unfortunately I don’t have this offer on any of my Amex cards, including Costco and BCP.
Bummmer….it was in my Costco but not my SPG.
I don’t have cell service on my bill. My employer pays it. Do you think a cable bill (with Triple play bundle) would work with Verizon. How would they know the difference?
I would guess it depends on how Verizon processes the payment. They may use a different vendor ID for Verizon Wireless and the other services. I think it is certainly worth a try.
[…] factors are critical in maximizing the offer. I saw on MilesToMemories that T-Mobile also allows splitting the payment. I don’t know about other carriers. Try it out […]
1 each on my Amex SPG and the wife’s Amex HH NAF card. None of the others. More targeted than most then, hopefully not a harbinger of the future.
I’m considering just pre-paying $75 in multiple payments to max this out and be done with it to simplify things. Think that will work OK? Then the auto-pay with Ink will resume whenever my credit balance falls below $0.
It should work but most companies have a limit as to how much credit you can have on an account. Some companies don’t care while others won’t even allow the smallest credit. The only way to do it is try!
Your 13% number is only applicable if you make $75 payments. Can you make multiple payments during a single billing cycle? Otherwise – for bills larger than 75, some may still be better off using an ink card.
With T-Mobile I can make multiple payments, but you are right that some others may not be able to. I would guess though that even if your provider’s website doesn’t allow it, that agents can take multiple payments via the telephone.
Although I think the “fine print” terms says you have to make payments via the carrier website, not over the phone. However, in practice, it might not really matter.
Good point. It probably wouldn’t make a difference, but there is always a chance of it getting processed differently over the phone.
Shawn, how do you do multiple payments with T-mo? I just switched couple months ago so not really familiar with it.
Does the T-mo website allow you to split up your payments to 2 cards? so for example, let’s say your total bill for this month is $200, can you make a split payment online, pay $100 with one Amex card and $100 with other one, and earn you $20 back since you use 2 cards that have Amex offers in it.
Just paid my AT&T and I didn’t have to turn off my autopay. You can make partial AND split payments. I had a zero balance and it asked asked me if I was sure I wanted to make a payment on a zero balance. Once I did it, I got a confirmation that I have a $75 credit on my account. I will make the other two payments within the next two days. It probably doesn’t matter but I will do it anyways.
Thanks for sharing your experience Marcia!
