Stacking Amex Offers at Hilton

Last week I analyzed two different Amex Offers and theorized that they could be combined to amount to a ~37% discount on stays of $300 at Hilton hotels. Why is this valuable? Well, I suspect many of you are newly minted Diamonds who would love to take advantage of that status. Plus Hilton has an amazing footprint and in many cities their hotels have among the best locations.

As a reminder, here are the Amex offers I am talking about:

Offer 1: Get a one-time $60 statement credit by using your connected Card to spend $300+ on room rate and room charges, when you pay for your stay with Hilton Hotels & Resorts from 1/6/16 to 4/11/16.

Offer 2: Get a one-time $50 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend $250 or more on all room charges, including room rate, when you pay for your reservation directly with an eligible merchant by 3/31/2016. See terms for exclusions.

The Hilton specific offer is widely available by tweeting #AmexHilton or by loading it on the American Express website, however the hotel offer is targeted, although many people seemed to get some version of it.

Stacking Success

This morning I received an email from a reader who was able to confirm that both offers did indeed stack. In fact, he was able to split his hotel bill and get both credits on two different cards. Here is a screenshot showing the two credits stacking on the same card:

These offers stacked to give 25% off his stay in Hawaii!

Gift Cards?

This reader actually stayed at the hotel, so we don’t yet know if gift cards would work to trigger the credits. I still suspect they will, but I haven’t heard any data points. If someone has successfully purchased gift cards and received the credit, then feel free to leave a comment. If I hear any data points myself I’ll leave a comment in this post as well to keep everyone up to date.

Conclusion

The stacking of Amex Offers can be powerful as is seen in this example. Our reader saved 25% off of his Hawaiian vacation, but you could theoretically get up to 37% off if the charge is exactly $300. Either way, it is always a good idea to look for offers that compliment each other to see if you can save even more! I love it when a deal works out as planned.

  1. I’ve looked through my AMEX cards and don’t see the offer available….sadly. What would I tweet to get the offer(s)?

  2. Quick question – does the STAY have to fall within the Promotion Dates or is it possible to pay now for a stay over the summer and still get the credit?

Sorry if this is a noob inquiry…

    • Yes it does need to happen during the promotion dates because the final charge has to clear. There is a chance that a full prepaid reservation would work, but I haven’t seen any data points supporting that.

    • I believe the charge has to come from an individual property to code correctly. Buying online most likely will not trigger the credit, but I don’t have any data points to tell you one way or the other.

  3. I’m curious about the gift card solution. There are no Hiltons in my city, but lots of Hilton brands. We will be in Waikiki in a couple weeks at the Hyatt. The Hilton is around the corner. If the gift cards work, I’ll be sure to bring the right Amex cards.

  4. I did something similar (though less lucrative) last night with the Hampton Inn ($35 off $175 or more) and my version of the “any hotel” ($25 off $100 or more) offers. $60 off a $185 stay. I received e-mail confirmation, but haven’t seen the credit posted to my AmEx account (as the charge is still pending)
