Amex Small Business Saturday Promo

Amex Small Business Saturday Promo (And Beyond)

American Express has released a new promotion offering 2X rewards for shopping at small businesses. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

Now thru 12/31, you could earn 2X rewards when you Shop Small® with an enrolled American Express® Card.

Key Terms

  • Only the primary Card Member on the account can enroll.
  • You will not earn 2X rewards on any bonus you already enjoy with your Card, such as when you spend on certain types of purchases or at certain merchants.
  • Rewards Caps apply.

Replacing Small Business Saturday

Amex Small Business Saturday Promo

At this point it isn’t 100% percent evident that this promotion will replace credits for Small Business Saturday, but their press release seems to indicate that:

This year, we’re going all out to support the expanding network of small businesses who accept American Express by giving our Card Members yet another reason to Shop Small throughout the holiday season—including on Small Business Saturday.

Of course after offering multiple $10 credits per card two years ago on Small Business Saturday, Amex offered nothing last year so I suppose this is an improvement, especially considering it goes through the entire holiday season. Still, it is rather limited and since it does not include bonus categories, isn’t quite as nice as it sounds on the surface.

Register & Eligible Cards

There are about 50 eligible cards for this promotion. Among them are:

  • Personal Platinum
  • Personal Gold
  • Premier Rewards Gold
  • Various SkyMiles cards
  • Various SPG Cards!
  • Various HHonors Cards

You can find a full list of eligible cards, the full terms and register for the promotion on this promo page.

Conclusion

While I would rather have seen a nice credit for Small Business Saturday, for the second year in a row I will be freed up from obsessively chasing statement credits. Instead, my SPG card will most likely get more consideration when I am shopping at smaller merchants through the end of the year.

  1. This is a “meh” offer for me. I mostly spend at big box retailers, Amazon, Costco, Trader Joe’s. This won’t change what card I carry in my wallet at all. I checked the site and there isn’t a single retailer in a 5 mile radius where I live where I’d spend any money. Go figure…
