United and their frustrating refund policy – Miles Man
United really has been handling this situation as poorly as possible. And Eric’s situation occurred right after the DOT came out and said refunds should be issued for cancellations and large delays. I think a change that costs someone 8 hours would fit the bill. At least he was able to get an extra $50 voucher out of it that was good for 2 years. That may be a more favorable option for some out there.
A German Exception? Why the Country’s Coronavirus Death Rate Is Low – NY Times
How Germany has been able to limit their death rate has been pretty amazing to see. It is a great look into what they are doing differently and how they got ahead of everything early on.

It was said Germany has a younger and healthier population and genetics do seem to play a role. The NIH and CDC has found blacks and non white latinos in NYC and New Orleans have 4-5 times the death rate of those infected compared to other groups. Why: genetics.
In the U.S. COVID-19 really is a New York/NJ Virus. California with a 40 million population only has 400 deaths despite the screams for more ventilators and the USNS Mercy. NY has 8000 deaths concentrated in NYC. Closing travel from China at the end of January by the Trump administration was very effective as genetic analysis of the virus indicates 99% of the cases in NY are linked to Europe. If NYC had been quarantined and travel from Europe curtailed sooner the rest of the country would have been mostly spared.
It should be said obesity is a risk factor for the severe complications of this respiratory flu and 36% of people in NYC are obese.
You think blacks and non-white latinos are genetically pre-disposed to the virus’ effects? All the data suggests it’s a lack of access to quality healthcare in non-white areas in the US. Years and years of building the best healthcare facilities in white neighborhoods and underfunding/closing facilities in non-white areas is why blacks are dying at the highest rate. It’s not their bodies, it’s our government.
Here’s a follow-up on why blacks in the US are more likely to get COVID-19 and how it’s not genetics:

Germany has 31 deaths/ million pop., Canada has 13/million pop. Maybe there are countries that are handling this even better. For comparison, the U.S. has a death rate of 50/ million pop. which is still much better than most democracies.
