That is one of the problems with gift cards.  You have less protections as a buyer than you would with a credit card.  Companies also think they can do what they want with your balances.  Look no further than Shawn’s ordeal with Build a Bear or our reader’s issue with Kohl’s.  You also have to worry about fraudsters when purchasing them, especially if they are purchased from Safeway.

This is nothing new with issuers but it was triggered from a fraud alert.  Depending on the bank these happen often for larger purchases or out of town purchases.  That makes the situation a little more scary.
