Arrival+ Retention

My Barclay Arrival+ Retention Phone Call Results

I have had a string of denials from Barclaycard as of late.  Their reasoning was that I have had too many new accounts in the last 24 months. They were talking about other banks because the only card I have with Barclaycard is the Arrival+.  I have had it for a few years but I don’t use it much anymore because of the horrendous $100 minimum travel redemption.  I still don’t get the thinking on setting those terms besides hoping for breakage.

It may have been out of spite or just because I am trying to simplify my life but I decided to cancel my card.  The annual fee hasn’t posted yet and won’t for a few more months.  I really wasn’t looking to keep the card.

Phone Call

After going over the reasons why I was closing the account and that I would be forfeiting $19 in points the agent came up with a few offers.  The first was a spending offer for $50 in points after spending $1000 per month for 3 months.  This is Barclaycard’s standard spending bonus that seems to come around the time of your card’s renewal date.  The offer wasn’t too tempting to me.

Then the agent offered me their no annual fee card with a $10 bonus for the product change.  This would push me over the $25 minimum redemption threshold the no annual fee card has since my $19 in points would carry over. (Don’t ask me why their lessor card has better terms than their premium card.)  I was considering it since it was $25 for doing essentially nothing.  Then he threw in the kicker that the $50 spending bonus offer works on the new card as well.  That would be like getting 3.5% back on that $3,000 in spend ($75 plus the 1% I would earn). I decided to take the offer.

Conclusion

The agent did his job and did it well.  I went into this phone call 100% wanting to close my card and he came up with something that enticed me enough to keep my account open.  I forgot to mention that the card has my largest credit line so played a part in my decision as well.  The offer isn’t great but I will take over 3% on my spend wherever I can get it.

  1. Can you still use the travel portal with the no fee card? I’m probably switching back to earning bonus’ soon but I do write stories to earn miles sometimes.
