BBVA NBA Partnership Ending
The BBVA NBA American Express card has been one of my favorites for some time now. Twice a year it earns 5% cashback on up to $5,000 in purchases and it is also eligible for Amex Offers. This little no annual fee card has been one I have enjoyed keeping in my portfolio.
Unfortunately that may all be coming to an end. According to Doctor of Credit, BBVA is sending out notices to holders of their NBA Checking account informing them that as of June 30, 2017 these accounts will be converted to normal checking.
This change entails the following:
- NBA Checking accounts will be converted to ClearConnect Checking accounts.
- New non-NBA debit cards will be issued.
- BBVA online profiles will no longer be able to be customized to the customer’s favorite NBA team.
It sure does seem as if the NBA and BBVA are ending their partnership, although I am not aware if any credit card holders have received the same notice. Let’s pray that these changes only apply to the checking account and that the NBA Amex will be grandfathered in, but I don’t expect that to be the case.
As a reminder if you have this card, you still have another week to earn 5% cashback everywhere on up to $5K in purchases.

If this partnership ends completely, do you think the NBA will just move to another bank for credit cards. Can’t see them being the only one of the big 4 north American sports leagues without some kind of branded credit card.
In a world where almost every single major brand has a co-branded card, I expect the NBA will definitely form another partnership. Of course I doubt that new card will be quite as lucrative as this one, but who knows.
