Up to 29x Return at Sears
On the heels of yesterday’s post about having a shopping portal strategy, the United MileagePlus portal has an increased payout at Sears today. Normal members can receive 8 miles per dollar at Sears while holders of their co-branded credit card can receive 12 points per dollar.
It is possible to go through the portal to purchase gift cards (it is best to buy e-gift cards or reload an existing gift card). After purchasing the gift cards, you can then go back through the portal to buy your merchandise.
Additionally, cards like the Discover It and Chase Freedom earn 5x back at Sears in the 4th quarter. (Up to $1,500 in spend.) Add it all up and it amounts to 29x points per dollar if you do it right.
If you have never purchased gift cards at Sears before, don’t be surprised if your order goes into a pending status.
This happens often and the best thing to do is to call them at 1-888-396-5299Â so that they can verify your information and release your order. (I have to do this every single time!)
I saw this deal at the same time on both Points with a Crew & Frequent Miler. Each site has a great write up about it!
New Best Buy Amex Offer
There is a new Best Buy Amex Offer available giving $30 back with the purchase of $300 at Best Buy. I saw this Amex Offer yesterday, however none of my accounts were targeted.
Fortunately Doctor of Credit found a registration page where you can check to see if any of your cards are eligible including non-Amex issued American Express cards.
While the offer is still targeted and not all accounts are eligible, I was able to find one card which was elibile. Remember some Best Buy stores sell Visa gift cards.
If you are able to get the offer on two cards, you could purchase 3 x $200 cards for $617.85 including fees, thus realizing a $42.15 profit plus credit card rewards.
For a more detailed breakdown of the deal, I highly recommend heading over to Doctor of Credit!

Glad I spotted this, was just about to drop some money at Sears!
Darn, 0-fer on my AMEX’s using DoC’s BestBuy link. I assume there’s probably no reason to check AU cards (if primary cards weren’t targeted), but I guess it doesn’t hurt to check. I was getting excited by DoC’s idea of the previous AMEX Offer of $25 off $250 and this $30 off $300 stacking. 🙂
Yeah, but most likely they targeted it so that wouldn’t happen. The only card I got it on was a Citi issues Amex card which didn’t have the other offer.
If you are using a Chase Freedom to buy the Sears gift cards, you definitely want to buy the e-gift cards (preferably re-load a physical gift card), as physical gift cards (shipped to you) will code as being sold by Kmart and will not qualify for the Freedom 4Q 5x.
Yes that is correct. Also, this deal is probably only for today, so in order to do the double dip you need to purchase gift cards that can be used today to buy the merchandise. E-gift cards are the way to go, although reloading a gift card is probably the best option if you have one!
