BluStor Cybergate – Is This the One?
A few months ago I brought you a story about Plastc, an all in one credit card solution that is supposedly coming to market later this year. Plastc works pretty simply. You store all of your credit card data on the card and then can choose which account you want to pay with. Plastc is secured by an app on your smartphone.
After writing about Plastc, many people commented that physical credit cards are going away. Certainly with the popularity of Apple Pay and other NFC technologies, credit cards are going to become less popular, but I still think they will stick around for awhile.
Another Mobile Security Solution
Either way, another mobile “cyber security platform” is emerging. Former Seagate co-founder Finis Conner is behind BluStor CyberGate, yet another all in one card. This card though aims to go much further than Plastc.
According to their IndieGoGo campaign, BluStor CyberGate uses an app called GateKeeper to store your passwords, important files, credit card data and to create security tokens. In other words, it goes far beyond being a payment alternative.
How the Security Works
BluStor CyberGate is a physical card that sits in your wallet. When trying to access their GateKeeper app, it will communicate via Bluetooth with your iOS or Android phone. The phone will then compare your biometric data to what is stored on the card to see if you are granted access.
According to their campaign, BluStor CyberGate is also an open mobile platform, meaning that developers will be able to write additional functionality for it. In other words, they are trying to make it future proof.
Conclusion
Currently the campaign has only raised $744 of the $250,000 goal, so I am not sure how successful this product is going to be. While there are different levels of support, for just $99 you can get your very own BluStor CyberGate when the product comes to market. You can find the campaign here.
While I think this is perhaps the most interesting of the products of this type that we have seen, I will be holding off for now, just as I did with Plastc. What about you? Do you think this product stands a chance? Let me know!

I’m signing up! Could develop something cool with the card. Could use it for more than just a credit card.
