Cardholders Report Amex Autopay Issue
Some American Express cardholders are reporting an autopay issue affecting payments scheduled around this past weekend, with payments failing to process on time.
According to several reports on reddit, payments scheduled on or around August 23 were not processed that same day and showed as pending for a day or two. That caused some accounts to be treated as past due and resulted in late fees being added. American Express representatives have reportedly acknowledged the issue via chat.
But this problem may also affect rewards. Some cardholders say Membership Rewards points from the last statement period were forfeited because Amex’s system treated the account as having a late payment.
Customers who contacted Amex have reported getting the late fees reversed, but anyone affected should also check their Membership Rewards activity to make sure that they are issued correctly. If points were forfeited, cardholders should ask Amex to restore those as well.
If you had an American Express payment scheduled around last weekend, it is worth checking your payment history, statement for any late fees, and Membership Rewards account for missing points.
This is also a good time to reschedule any autopay payments that are scheduled too close to due date. You want to give yourself a few days just in case the payment doesn’t go through for any reason.
