Day 11 – New Orleans, Louisiana

When we decided to go to New Orleans, I put a couple of must do things on the itinerary. The first was to go to the French Quarter, the second to eat at Mother’s and the third to have coffee and beignets (French doughnuts topped with powdered sugar) at Café du Monde.

With the first two items on the list satisfied, we headed over to Café du Monde first thing in the morning. Café du Monde was about a twenty five minute walk from our hotel. The walk allowed us to work up an appetite, but more importantly we were able to burn some calories. I am not sure, but I think the beignets have a calorie or two. When we arrived, we sat down and enthusiastically ordered two coffees and three orders of beignets.

All three of us really enjoyed this sweet breakfast. Shawn Reece couldn’t get enough and thoroughly did his job of making a mess with the powdered sugar. I even had a cup of the famous coffee and I have to say that it was very good. With the third and final item checked off of the list, we decided to explore the French Quarter and Mississippi River corridor a bit more.

After an hour or so of exploration we discovered the free ferry across the Mississippi River and quickly rode it both ways. What can I say? I have a thing for boats, especially when they are free! We also walked up and down the banks of the river and took in the view. Following a couple more hours of stumbling around we headed back towards the hotel for a quick break.

We only took thirty minutes to rest our feet in the hotel before heading over to the Louisiana Children’s Museum. The Louisiana Children’s Museum was “two stories of fun” packed into an old warehouse a couple of blocks from the hotel. It had several interactive children’s areas that Shawn Reece enjoyed. Jasmine and I even decided to play along too. We ended up “playing around” for about two hours before it was time to leave.

We looked at the infamous itinerary and didn’t see anything else planned for the night, so we decided to head back to the hotel again to enjoy the air conditioning. However, on the walk back, Jasmine and I consulted each other and eventually agreed that another dose of Mother’s for dinner would hit the spot, so we indulged ourselves before packing it in for the night. Overall, we feel that these couple of days gave us a nice “taste” of New Orleans”. I do however think that New Orleans, like Las Vegas, is probably better visited on vacation without a child. However, for a trip like this, a couple of days with Shawn Reece here was perfect.

On another note, the architecture in the French Quarter charmed me. I must have taken over one hundred pictures of the buildings. I just couldn’t stop snapping the camera as every block brought about a new interesting building. This kind of history is something that you will never find in Las Vegas. I just love it!

We leave here in the morning and probably will drive all the way to Orlando in lieu of making it a two day trip. This will give us the opportunity to get settled in before our family arrives on Friday. We also desperately need to do some laundry! So far we are having the time of our lives and Shawn Reece has really embraced the spirit of exploration. Often times he will say “Daddy, lets go explore” with the excitement only a six year old can convey. He also refers back to funny moments from the last couple of weeks with “remember when we” or “remember when this happened”. He is really adjusting well to this lifestyle. All I can say is that he is a very special little boy. (With a lot of energy!). We are truly blessed! Talk to you soon.

We want to thank everyone for the comments and emails. Your support is truly appreciated and keeps us going.
