Citi American Airlines Credit Card Bonus Increased to 60,000 Miles

Citi American Airlines Bonus Increased to 60,000 Miles

Citi has increased their offer for the Platinum Select World Personal and Business Mastercard to 60,000 AAdvantage miles.  The standard offer is 50,000 AAdvantage miles for each card.

Details on the Bonus vs Historical High

The 60,000 mile offer matches the highest public offer in the history of each card.  It is 10,000 miles more than the standard offer.  The offer terms are as follows:

  • Earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months of account opening.
  • $95 Annual fee is waived the first year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Bonus Restrictions

Many will not be eligible for these bonuses because of Citi’s anti churning rules.  The restrictions on Citi cards are as follows:

Business Card
  • Bonus miles and any additional special offer not available if you have had any CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® account opened or closed in the past 24 months.
Personal Card
  • American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.

The good news is that getting one of these cards does not exclude you from getting the other (personal vs business). For the personal version the Gold and Executive cards are included in “any Citi AAdvantage card” language.

Earning Structure

Both cards come with the same earning structure:

  • 2 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent on American Airlines purchases
  • 1 AAdvantage miles per $1 spent everywhere else

Cardmember Perks

The cards come with the following perks:

Personal Card
  • First checked bag free
  • Priority boarding
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 10% of your miles back on reward bookings up to 10,000 miles per year
  • The card gives you access to reduced mileage awards
Business Card
  • First checked bag free
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • The card gives you access to reduced mileage awards
  • Earn an American Airlines Companion Certificate each year after spending $30,000 or more.

Fees

The annual fee is $95 but is waived the first year.

Sign Up Bonus Value $780

AAdvantage miles have taken a nose dive in value over the last few years.  I currently value them a 1.3 cents a piece which puts the sign up value on each card at $780.  Feel free to substitute in your own value for AAdvantage miles.

Conclusion

AAdvantage miles are not the prized possession they used to be.  They have gone through a couple of devaluations over the last few years, and American Airlines’ saver award availability is at all time lows.  Having said that this can still be a valuable sign up offer for most.  $750 in value should not be overlooked.  As always make sure you have a use for the miles before applying.

Both cards come with some decent perks, but the personal card’s are superior.  The priority boarding and 10% mileage rebate may be the best two perks on either card.

The earning structure is non existent for either card.  These will be sock drawer cards for most people.  I think they are worth getting for the sign up bonus but they are not everyday spenders.

Will you be taking advantage of the increased offers?
