Citi Offers For You

Back in November of last year I covered Citi’s new Smart Savings cashback program. It works sort of like Amex Offers or Bank Amerideals. You load the offer, make a purchase and receive a credit back on your statement. You can find out how to search and load the offers here.

Expanded to More Cards

At the time of the launch the offers were only available on a small amount of accounts. For example, between my wife and I we only had one card with offers. Thankfully it does seem like the program has been rolled out to even more cards now. While only ThankYou point earning cards seem to have this program (at least for us), we are up to three cards with the offers available.

More Offers

In addition to getting the offers on more cards, there are a lot more offers than before. For example, here is what is currently available for me:

Earn 10% Back

  • LootCrate
  • Starbucks
  • Hampton Inn
  • Big 5 Sporting Goods
  • AllSaints
  • Carter’s
  • Red Robin
  • Chuck E. Cheese’s
  • Edible Arrangements
  • Sbarro
  • Bubba Gump
  • Il Fornaio
  • Janie and Jack
  • 1-800-Flowers
  • Hilton

Earn 5% Back

  • Autozone
  • Carl’s Jr.

Earn $2.50 Cash

  • In-n-Out

Analysis

As you can tell many of these offers aren’t terribly great, but it is nice to see Citi investing some resources into getting merchants to participate. Many of the brands above have discounted gift cards for sale, so I would always check that avenue first to see what makes sense.

Conclusion

While Citi’s Smart Savings cash back offer program still isn’t great, it is nice to see it being rolled out to more cards and to see even more offers available. While I won’t obsessively check for new offers, seeing them expand the program is a good reminder that I should poke in my accounts every so often to see what is available.

  1. I got a 10% offer at Panera. Pretty cool! Probably worth more than 60 cents! I may sign up for more Citi cards to really rack up the pennies. This cash back thing could inspire a whole new bunch of “offers for you” bloggers. Watch out for the competition!

Funny posting, Shawn, especially the “analysis” part!

  2. Let’s apply critical thinking here.

    1. “It works sort of like BankAmeriDeals.” No. It works EXACTLY like BankAmeriDeals. Down to the commas. Obviously contracted out to the same crappy company.

    2. I don’t think you’re really pointing out how much worse this than Amex’s offering. They are not in the same league. Not in the same universe.

    3. Cashback takes 1-2 billing cycles to post. That’s a long time to front money.

    4. Many cashback transactions don’t track. It’s almost like the list of Hilton hotels they got is cut off at G or something.

    5. Many many merchants have tiny cut offs. That Carl’s Jr deal? 10% back for me, max ONE DOLLAR. why are they bothering me about ONE DOLLAR?

    6. I’m worried Amex will take note of how horrible Citi is and borrow. Bad Citi bad

  3. I was excited when I opened that e-mail….until I read that the “maximum cash back is $3” for Starbucks and Five Guys. Not much of a deal here with that low max, atleast on my account.

  4. Only thing I have is a message that says ” More rewarding purchases are just a step away.
