Citi Premier Authorized User Offer

Citi Premier Authorized User Offer

I recently received a Citi Premier authorized user (AU) offer in the mail. I am normally pretty excited to see authorized user offers since they are like mini welcome offers, but, not this one so much. American Express has been tossing authorized user offers around like they are going out of style. They are even offering up to 20,000 points a pop with a 100K max! Citi, on the other hand, is offering a fraction of that with their offer unfortunately.

Citi Premier AU Offer Details

The Citi Premier authorized user offer details are as follows:
  • Add an authorized user for no extra fee.
  • Earn 2,500 ThankYou points after the authorized user spends $1,500 on purchases within the next 2 months.

Since this offer was for my card I will definitely not partake in it. I try to keep my wife hovering somewhere around Chase 5/24 status in case any new offers come around. Since adding authorized user cards to people’s accounts can add to your Chase 5/24 count it isn’t worth the aggravation with my wife. If it was for her card then maybe I would consider it since I don’t care about my 5/24 slots.

Overall, the offer is not great anyway. The offer only adds an additional 1.6 points per dollar on $1,500 in spend. For comparisons sake, Amex has offers that require $500-$4,000 in spend. They also offer 5,000-20,000 points for them.  That is offering 5-10 points per dollar on the required spend versus Citi’s paltry 1.6 points. Amex also gives up to 6 months to meet the requirements for most offers, which far surpasses the 2 months Citi offers.

Final Thoughts

I think this Citi Premier authorized user offer is a hard pass for most. Unless you don’t care about potentially burning a Chase 5/24 slot, and are under the bonus points are bonus points mantra, I don’t think it is worth the effort. I wish Citi would get into the 5K-10K range with these offers to compete with American Express.

Have you got a mailer for this offer? Were you planning on taking it or not?
