Citi ThankYou Adds Walgreens to Shop with Points Program

Citi announced today that ThankYou cardmembers can now use Shop with Points directly at the point of sale in nearly 9,000 Walgreens locations across the nation.

With Walgreens, ThankYou Points can be redeemed for a range of items from holiday must-haves to everyday necessities like personal care items, plus Halloween is just around the corner, so you can get your candy and other spooky goods.

But what value do you get when you use your ThankYou Points at Walgreens? It’s the same as many of the other merchants that are part of this program. You can redeem 1,250 ThankYou Points for a $10 discount. So it’s terrible value, just 0.8 cents per point.

For consumers who have a card which earns ThankYou Points and want to redeem points at Walgreens, Shop with Points is easy and seamlessly incorporated in the checkout experience. It takes a few steps:

  • Shop in-store at a U.S. Walgreens store and initiate the check-out process
  • Pay with an eligible Citi credit card for a purchase totaling more than $10.00
  • If the payment terminal screen prompts an offer to redeem ThankYou points, select “yes” to redeem ThankYou Points for $10 off that purchase. Once selected, $10 will instantly be deducted from the total payment amount
  • Receive a receipt which indicates that a reward was redeemed

  1. I got robbed by this at Walgreens less than an hour ago, I thought it was a credit from my Walgreens cash back. I didn’t realize what had happened till I saw this. I assume there is no way to reverse it, though I would love to be wrong. Is there any way we can decline these for all merchants and protect our Thank You Points
