CRT Indirect Purchaser Class Action Lawsuit
A recent class action settlement regarding devices with a Cathode Ray Tube or CRT has been settled with payouts totaling $576.75 million. The lawsuit alleged that CRT manufacturers fixed prices thus causing consumers to pay more for devices with CRTs in them. It is expected that each class member who submits a claim will receive at least $25 from the settlement. No proof of purchase is required.
Who Is Eligible
You are eligible to file a claim if you purchased a CRT Product (excluding Sony) for your own use in the following states and dates:
- Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia, between March 1, 1995, and November 25, 2007
- Hawaii between June 25, 2002, and November 25, 2007
- Nebraska between July 20, 2002, and November 25, 2007
- Nevada between February 4, 1999, and November 25, 2007
You must have also purchased the CRTs indirectly, meaning you didn’t get them directly from the “defendant manufacturers or alleged co-conspirators”. Purchasing them at a store like Best Buy or Circuit City (retro) qualifies. You can find more information regarding eligibility here.
How to Submit a Claim
You can submit your claim online at this link. The deadline for submission is December 7, 2015. As part of the claim you will be asked to provide details as to how many CRT devices you purchased during the applicable period. No proof of purchase is required.
Analysis
I am sure most people purchased a CRT device during this time period. Thinking back I know that I purchased multiple CRT televisions and CRT computer monitors between 1999 & 2007. In other words, I filed a claim since I am eligible and you probably are too. As a side note, this is a good reminder of how much nicer the world is without these behemoths on our desks and in our living rooms!
Conclusion
If you purchased a CRT device then you are probably eligible to get about a $25 payout. Of course the final amount is determined by how many people actually file a claim, so please only do so if you are eligible. Also, don’t forget to check if you are eligible for another $25 from the tuna settlement I covered earlier this week.

A local company, http://www.epcusa.com/services/recycling/ , has for a few decades taken apart and recycle computer items. The management is willing to hire and train minorities.
Good find! Although not sure how much nicer the world is, being that most of them are now being dumped into landfills across the world, and making other people sick. Too bad Oregon isn’t on the list, cuz I would’ve joined in.
