Should You Apply?
Let me start by saying that the bonuses on these cards increase at least once a year, so this is most likely not your last opportunity to get these bonuses. I think these offers are very good if you have a need for the miles and/or the benefits of the cards. For example, it is possible to manufacture Delta elite status and the Platinum card(s) is key in doing that.
Both cards also come with priority boarding and a free checked bag which can make a difference. My main concern when getting a card is whether I am getting a good deal on the bonus. In this case I think the answer is yes. Since Amex only gives one bonus per lifetime per product, you want to get the best available and this is about as good as it gets.
To put it into monterary terms, I believe SkyMiles are worth at least $.01 each and for certain redemptions are worth much more than that. At $.01 each the bonus is worth $500 plus the statement credit does have some value as well. Overall it is a solid bonus. So should you apply?
Apply or Don’t Apply If…
The suggestions below are not my direction as to what to do, but are instead my personal thoughts on reasons one might want to apply or not apply for these cards.
Apply if:
- You have a use for the miles.
- You have a use for the benefits.
- You are trying to manufacture Delta status.
- You don’t have any other Amex cards you are looking to apply for.
Don’t Apply If:
- You have no use for Delta SkyMiles in the short term.
- You don’t have any plans to fly Delta in order to use the benefits.
- You have already had the card before since you won’t get the bonus.
- You have other Amex cards you are looking to apply for which fit your overall plan better.
Conclusion
I know you are probably seeing a lot of noise about these offers going away tomorrow, but don’t get caught up in the hype. Yes, these are very good offers and they are definitely worth considering. With that said, make sure they fit in with your overall strategy. If they do, then it is probably a good idea to pull the trigger before the bonus goes back to normal tomorrow and if you miss out or aren’t ready, then I guarantee you another deal will come along!

I applied for Platinum Delta Biz and got approved. Do you know if I buy $100 Delta GC (2 x $50), then the $100 statement credit will be given?
It has worked in the past. Basically whatever will trigger the Amex Platinum credit for Delta will trigger this credit. I would check the latest data points on Flyertalk just to be sure.
Thanks Shawn! This is awesome. I have bought 2 $50 Delta GCs with personal Amex Platinum and credits posted as expected. So, will do the same once I get the card in the mail.
So basically all Amex card offers are once in a lifetime? (Fairly new to this miles thing) Whereas Visa, Chase with United lets you repeat offers after a 2 year gap?
If so then should I get 50,000 with gold, then wait for another 60,000 offer for platinum?
Thank you!
Yes as of now Chase lets you get a bonus on a card again after 2 years while Amex is one bonus per product.
Well done sir. The sheer volume of posts about these mediocre offers by folks who only months ago decried Skymiles as a second-rate currency is astounding. The hypocrisy is strong and I’m glad to see some still have integrity.
I rarely comment on blogs but this is an incredibly helpful post so thank you! Everyone is posting about these offers but it’s helpful to walk through and be reminded of the pros and cons and that waiting until next time is an option. Great content.
Glad it helped!
