Discover’s 4th Quarter 5% Categories
Discover’s 4th quarter bonus categories are now available for registration. This upcoming quarter, the 5% categories include Amazon and Target purchases. These are popular merchants, but not as exciting as 5% categories. Let’s see the details.
How It Works
The Discover it card earns 5% cashback on up to the first $1,500 in bonus category spend per quarter. If you are able to fully maximize the benefit then you can earn $75 cash back every 3 months. That’s a total of $300 every year.
Activate
Activate to earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Amazon.com and Target from 10/1/23 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 12/31/23, on up to $1,500 in purchases. The 4th quarter bonus categories can be activated now by visiting this page and logging into your account.
Key Terms
Here are the terms that explain which purchases will earn the 5% cashback in the 4th quarter:
- Amazon.com purchases include those made through the Amazon.com checkout, like digital downloads, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Local Deals, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace. This also includes purchases in-store at Amazon Go. Amazon, the Amazon.com logo, the smile logo and all related marks are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates.
- Target purchases include those made in store at Target, Target.com, or through the Target app. Purchases from individual merchants and stand-alone stores within physical Target locations may not be eligible for this promotion. Purchases made online or through the Target app from Target affiliates, individual merchants or stand-alone stores may not be eligible for this promotion, including, but not limited to, targetoptical.com and targetphoto.com.
Maximizing
Amazon and Target are both popular merchants, so everyone can easily generate some organic spend. You can also purchase gift cards if you want to lock in some savings for later.
However, you can already get 5% off at Target with a Target RedCard, and the Amazon credit card also gets 5% back on Amazon purchases. If you already have those cards, then this quarter’s Discover categories are pretty useless. If not, then you should be excited.
3rd Quarter Reminder
As a reminder Discover is paying 5% on Gas Station and Digital Wallet purchases in the 3rd quarter (through September 30).
Get the Card
If you don’t have the Discover it card currently, you can earn double cashback your first year. That means you earn 2% cashback on normal purchases and 10% cashback on bonus category purchases.
The card also has a $100 signup bonus.
Conclusion
Discover’s 4th quarter bonus categories can be useful but are not very exciting since there are already options to save 5% at Amazon and Target. If you plan to use your Discover card at these merchants, don’t forget to activate the the 4th Quarter bonus categories first, before you make any qualifying purchases, or you won’t earn the bonus cash. Do that now! There’s no reason not to.
