Beware of Fake Equifax Websites When Filing Claims
Equifax recently suffered a data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly every adult in the country. After a class action lawsuit, a settlement will see the company finally begin to pay out damages to those who were affected.
But the Federal Trade Commission is now warning consumers looking to file claims to beware of scammers and fake websites.
“Beware of fake websites claiming to be the Equifax settlement claims website,” the agency tweeted Monday. They are advising affected consumers to file claims through the official website only.
The settlement says that each consumer that had personal data compromised due to the data breach, can get $125 or more in compensation. But depending on the number of people that file claims, the amount could be lower. Make sure to file your claim anyway. Any payment is better than nothing.
