Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
I recently had a chance to spend a few days in the U.A.E. after my visit to India earlier this year. In addition to navigating the massive shopping malls and historic souks of Dubai, I stayed for two nights on YAS Island, a resort area on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi which houses the Formula 1 race track and a few other tourist attractions including Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.
One Of A Kind
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is one of the few amusement park projects in the U.A.E. which was actually completed after the “Great Recession”. It opened in 2010 and is still the largest indoor amusement park in the world by size. It truly is an engineering feat.
Formula Rossa
In addition to being the largest indoor park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is home to the fastest roller coaster in the world. Formula Rossa launches riders to a maximum speed of about 150 MPH as they head out of the building and into a course which is exposed to the elements.
Since the coaster is exposed to the elements and sand storms are common, all riders must wear mandatory eye protection. While they aren’t the most comfortable thing in the world, I kind of think they add to the overall experience.
Other Attractions
If you aren’t purely interested in speed, Ferrari World has a number of other attractions including motion simulators, dark rides, a log flume themed to a racing engine and another set of racing coasters. It is stacked with attractions, all of which carry the Ferrari theme.
Without a doubt though the main draw is Formula Rossa. Even though the coaster slows at the top of the first hill, the launch is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Both locals and tourists alike were lining up for the ride when I visited, including many younger children who were just tall enough to ride.
