Free Spirit Hate Miles Are Posting
A couple of months ago Spirit made a big splash with their “hate” campaign. In exchange for hating on any airline, Spirit will give you 8,000 Free Spirit miles. I was reminded yesterday by a reader that the miles have posted for most people so I thought I would urge everyone to check their accounts.
Free Spirit miles are unique in that expire after 90 days of inactivity, making them almost worthless. The two ways to avoid their expiration are to either fly Spirit every 90 days (insert joke here) or to get their co-branded credit card.
In fact, if you do fly Spirit then the credit card isn’t a horrible deal. Not only will it allow you to easily keep your Spirit miles active, but awards are much cheaper for credit card holders. For example, the cheapest one-way award for a regular member is 10,000 miles, while credit card holders only pay 2,500.
Still Going Strong
Spirit committed to giveaway up to one billion miles and apparently they haven’t hit that goal yet. I was surprised when looking into it, but the promotion is still going strong. You can still submit your hate here. The company has also published some statistics based on the hate submitted.
More To Consider
If you are wondering about the Spirit experience, I have written a few articles in the past, including a full review of a recent flight. Spirit isn’t terrible if you go in knowing what to expect. In other words, you get what you pay for.
For more to consider, check out the Definitive Guide to Gaming Spirit over at the Lazy Traveler’s Handbook. It contains everything you need to know when considering whether you want to get involved with the low cost carrier.
Conclusion
Whether you submitted your hate to get something off your chest, you are looking to use the miles for magazines or have hopes of redeeming for a flight, don’t let them expire. Check your Free Spirit account to see if your miles have posted. If you haven’t yet participated, why not do it now? It feels good to hate on the airlines!

@milestomemories
do you know if the 8,000 height miles promo is still valid please?
when i click on it, it only shows the video, without any further steps.
thanks!
I believe it has ended unfortunately.
Thanks for the mention, Shawn. There is a very easy thing I do to keep miles beyond that atrocious 3 mths expiration period. Set up your CC automatic payment and be done with it. And yes, if you want these 2.5K redemptions, you will need their CC anyway.
One of the Spirit’s best features is their Big Front Seat. I’ve never seen it cost more than $70 to upgrade even for Latin America flights. This is an exceptional bargain!
I got them and redeemed for magazines – great deal (although it was a bit of a pain, the miles took a long time to arrive, the redemption page was buggy)!
My entire family did this quite a few months ago. We all got the miles. Especially if you have the Spirit MC and can find a 2500 one-way award flight that works for you, this is a nice deal. Another thought on keeping miles alive (given the horrible 3-month expiration) is to sign up to do surveys linked to your Spirit account. Just make sure to do one short survey every 3 months and don’t cut it too close. I ended up redeeming some of the 8000 miles for my kids on magazines, since I don’t think kids qualify for the surveys. I just wish I could take advantage of this deal a second time!
