hilton hhonors amex highest bonus

A new offer has surfaced for on the no annual fee Hilton HHonors American Express credit card. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

Earn 70,000 Hilton HHonors™ Bonus Points after you spend $1,000 on purchases on your Card in your first 3 months of Card Membership

Comparing Bonuses

Currently the public offer on this card gives 40,000 HHonors points after spending $750 in the first 3 months. There was a link around giving 60,000 points, however this new 70,000 point offer is the highest I have ever seen for this no annual fee card.

As a reminder, this card gives you silver status with the ability to earn Gold with $20K in spend. (Probably not a good deal.) It also earns in the following ways:

  • 7X Hilton HHonors Bonus Points for each dollar of eligible purchases charged on your Card directly with a participating hotel or resort within the Hilton Portfolio.
  • 5X Hilton HHonors Bonus Points for each dollar of eligible purchases on your Card: at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations.
  • 3X Hilton HHonors Bonus Points for all other eligible purchases on your Card.

My Thoughts

I really think the value of Hilton HHonors points are on the low end redemptions and that is why I keep a stash around for when I find a good deal. Just a few months ago I applied for Citi’s no annual free HHonors card when it had a 75K bonus just to pad my balance. This bonus seems like a very good deal if you have a similar need.

Also remember that this card and any authorized user cards will be eligible for Amex Offers which ups the value for some. You can only have four American Express credit cards, so this no annual fee card will take up a slot, but it will also be building a history with American Express. Overall this is a solid deal in my opinion.

Conclusion

Had I not recently picked up a decent chunk of Hilton HHonors points from my Citi application then I would be considering this. Whenever you can get a “highest ever” offer on a credit card it is generally a good idea to at least consider it to see how it works into your overall plan. Hopefully this new deal will be timely for some of you.

  1. Far and away, best value for Hilton is if you’re a Diamond member. Easily best top tier hotel status program – by a country mile. Forget what the blithering idiot card shills tell you – Hilton Diamond blows away all other programs. The shills simply don’t have financial interest in showing how pathetic Hyatt or SPG top tier status is in comparison and so suckers, er, esteemed readers are treated to willfully misleading “analysis” to keep the card application$ flowing.

This 70K offer is a decemt deal, particularly since Amex will upgrade to Surpass in a year and you can get another 50-60K HH without a hardpull. And you really want the Surpass so you can put $40K on it to get Diamond because that’s where you unlock huge value.

While superficial analysis indicates low end is best value for HH, the sweet spot is any property with suites – normally you get ~0.4cpp value but with suite upgrades for Diamond members, one can consistently get 1.5-2cpp value. No other hotel program offers such leverage – only Carlson’s defunct second night free program offered better value (but Carlson didn’t have true top tier so there were big caveats using them)

For most people, Hilton should be their main hotel program because of great Diamond bennies, large footprint, and ability to get both Citi and Amex Hilton cards, coupled with ease of MSing sizable numbers of low cost points.

That said, since not in blogger’s self-interest, don’t expect to see non-biased analysis – guys like VFTW willfully pan Hilton because of those lucrative SPG and Hyatt cards. I bet if SPG goes away, we’ll see some sort of self-serving nonsense about why Marriott’s utterly crap program is now a great deal, lol.

    • You make good points Paul. I do think Hyatt status is better personally but I can’t fault your stance. As for why bloggers talk about what they do, I believe the Hilton and SPG cards are part of affiliate programs and the Hyatt card is not. (Although I don’t have direct affiliate links.)

  2. Received 60K 2 weeks ago. Tried to match to 70K, they told me only if I received the direct mail with this offer and could provide proof of that.

  3. Is this card and the surpass considered the same product? If I apply for this 70k offer and the 85k offer on the surpass will I get both bonuses?

Likewise for other pairs of Amex products like:
    1. Everyday and everyday preferred
    2. Blue cash and blue cash preferred
    3. Delta family
    4. Charge card family
    Etc

  4. While agree Hilton points on not as valuable as they once were. You can still get decent value at hotels in the 30k-50k range and combine that with the 5th free night. They still have some decent hotels in that range.

Here is a question. I applied for the no fee HH Amex maybe 4 years ago now. Since then I upgraded to the Surpass last May when I was targeted for 50k HH points for upgrading. Would I be eligible for the new signup bonus for either the Surpass or the no fee HH? Kind of confused with Amex’s policies for upgrading cards. FYI was going to downgrade back to no fee HH soon as I no longer need the gold status from the card.

    • Unfortunately you aren’t eligible for the bonus on either product. The application states, “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

There is one exception to that rule though. (Sort of.) Some targeted offers come in the mail without that language. If you do receive an offer without the above language, then you should be eligible. As far as I know, all public offers available on the internet contain that language though so you would need to receive a targeted solicitation from Amex.

  5. has amex ever matched? if anyone got it, plz input. recently got the 50K pts + $50 credit… highly doubt that it can be changed in my case b/c of the stmt credit

  6. Have you had experience getting them to match a bonus? I just got the 60,000 card in January. What are the chances they would add the other 10,000?

  7. With 70,000 Hilton points, I can score nearly 3/4ths of a night at an aspirational property.
Thank goodness for Amex promos or this card would be a complete waste of time.

    • You can downgrade from the Surpass but the bonus wouldn’t be the same. Also remember Amex cards are once per lifetime, so once you have held the card then you aren’t eligible for a sign up bonus. It is generally better to sign up for Amex personal cards to get a new bonus rather than converting.

      • I see….I was looking swap out one of my Delta Plats. Maybe looking to move in the next 3 months to looking to keep pulls and new accts off the CR.
