How To Cancel Moviepass – Step By Step Guide

Moviepass has been one of the hot topics of 2018.  It came onto the scene before 2018 but it really blew up when they dropped their rates to $9.95.  Well the deal that was too good to be true is finally on it’s last leg.  Moviepass ran out of money last week and people are having all kinds of issues with the app.  I decided to cancel my monthly plan and thought I would do a quick guide on how to cancel your Moviepass membership in case you were in the same boat.

It was a fun ride while it lasted but I am now considering a switch to Sinemia.  Especially since they recently reduced their pricesIf you cancelm remember that you cannot set up a new account for 9 months, per Moviepass’ terms.

Step-by-Step Guide

The cancellation is completely done in the app.

Step 1

Open the Moviepass app on your smart phone and click account at the bottom right of your screen.  Then select the first choice at the top, Account Details.

Step 2

Once you select account details you need to select the top option again, Account Information.

Step 3

After selecting account information you will be taken to your full account info page.  This will list your personal info, the monthly billing date, and your payment method.  Next to this info will be the choice to cancel your account.  Select it.

Step 4

The final screen will ask you why you are cancelling and ask you to confirm it one final time.  Your plan will run until the next billing date, no prorated refunds.

Conclusion

After completing these steps I received an email from Moviepass confirming my cancellation and the final date that my account will work.  If you cancel remember that you can not set up a new account for 9 months per Moviepass’ terms.  So if they do by some miracle rebound you will not be able to open up another account.

If that would upset you then you may wanna wait until the app is officially kaput. I decided it wasn’t worth paying another month for.

  1. I kinda feel you should put a disclaimer at the top of this post: Canceling your account will not result in a refund, so you might as well wait until your re-up date nears. Why cancel if you have 3 weeks left on the card? We’ll know by then if the service will survive, and then you won’t be out of luck when you can’t re-subscribe for 9 months.

    Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty likely they’ll die soon (though they’re supposedly back up and running today), but why jump the gun if there’s no benefit?

    ALSO: I’ve been a Sinemia subscriber for over a year, and this past month their card has randomly been denied (even when checked into the movie properly). Also, the process for checking in to a movie is really painful. They deliberately drag it out (I think there are 5 screens you have to page through now, plus you have to search for the movie, and then check two boxes).

    • I can move it at the top – it is in the conclusion. I was ready to cancel anyways – price increase to 14.95 upcoming within 30 days announced today, changing terms all the time, surge pricing, outages etc. I would rather do it an not have to think about it 3 weeks from now.

  2. tried to see a movie Thursday, and today, would not accept my card, they are out of money. Thanks for the guide, as the one in their FAQ did not work.

  3. For those of us who bought it via Costco, I don’t really feel like a chargeback against them, such an admirable company in my estimation and not their fault. I imagine they’ll offer a refund if asked. What doesn’t anyone else recommend for those who bought via Costco?

      • I wouldn’t feel right shaking down Costco on this, and the more I think about it, I am rooting for MoviePass, have gotten value well beyond what I paid, and am not a fan of the chargeback culture around this hobby, so I’ll stick it out, and if they really shut down, will let it go.

        • I think a lot of that depends on how long you have had it. If it has only been a few months then I could see it. If you have had it for 6-7 months or more then I would agree with you since you probably have received more value than the annual fee was.

  4. I haven’t used my Moviepass in 2 months but today I went to see if my favorite theatre (Angelika) was still there and to my surprise MANY movie theaters in San Diego say “no longer available”. The only one that will pull up is in Vista which is really far away!

    • It looks like it is down to just E-Ticketing theaters now. I was able to see Mission Impossible tonight via e-ticketing at a MJR theater. I am not sure why that option is still working since it was $4 more per ticket then I normally pay but I am going to try to get what I can out of it while I can.

    • Although the E-Ticketing theaters are probably the locations where they worked out a discount with so that may be why.

  5. I cancelled mine yesterday. I haven’t used my monthly moviepass for the last 2 months . Several days ago I checked the AMC movies and all movies had premium prices. I cancelled and subscribed to AMC insider for $5 Tuesday

        • Interesting I have always got the $5 tickets on Tuesdays at the theater and then I would get upset that I wasn’t getting a lot of points because of it since MP was paying the bill 🙂

    • I think that is your only option at this point. I am not sure if it would work or not but if you have been having issues with the app and want to cancel it is worth a try.

    • I initiated a charge back today, will find out within 7-10 days if they’ll refund. Not only is MS support non-responsive but it explicitly states no prorated refund will be issued for yearly subscribers. So yeah, you should most definitely file a charge back.
