Hyatt Reveals Hotel Category Changes for 2026
We already knew that a Hyatt devaluation was coming in May due the new award chart which will include 5 different tiers within each category. And today we learned that Hyatt will change categories for 136 properties, with 112 hotels will shifting to a higher award category. There are also 24 properties that are moving down one category, with half of them in China.
Let’s look at some important dates and details, and then the full list of hotels that are shifting categories in 2026.
Important Details
The new award chart and the category changes for these 136 hotels will go into effect on May 20, 2026
- All free night award and Points + Cash redemptions booked before 8:00 am CDT on Wednesday, May 20, will follow the current award chart regardless of stay dates, even if the hotel is shifting to a higher award category. Â
- Members who have existing award or Points + Cash bookings as of 8:00 am CDT on Wednesday, May 20 for a night on or after Wednesday, May 20 at a Hyatt hotel that moved down to a lower category, will receive an automatic one-time refund on the point difference. Points will be returned to members’ accounts starting Wednesday, May 20.Â
- Any free night award and Points + Cash redemptions booked on or after 8:00 am CDT on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, will follow the new award chart. Â
- Once changes go into effect on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. CDT, any adjustments made to existing reservations will follow the terms of the new award chart.Â

Conclusion
There was already a a devaluation for peak pricing due the new award chart, and these category changes make things even worse for some popular properties.
There are a few hotels that are moving from Category 7 to 8 and that means that they will likely jump from 35,000 points to 75,000 points per night at peak travel season.
The one good thing is that you can lock in your reservations now before these changes go into effect on May 20.
