Is Western Union Going Cash Only For Money Orders?

We had a report in our Facebook Group that had my heart sink.  Group member Mike shared a picture from his local grocery store, a Giant Eagle chain store, that has me questioning, is Western Union going cash only for money orders?

Is Western Union Going Cash Only For Money Orders?

As you can see from the picture it says Western Union money order purchases will be limited to cash only starting March 1, 2021. At first I figured this was a Giant Eagle specific change (474 stores in the Midwest and East Coast), until I looked closer at the sign.  The sign is from Western Union and not from Giant Eagle. Then another commenter said they say reports of this at other brands posted.  I have not been able to verify that claim and I did not see a similar sign at my local Kroger store yesterday.

This is troubling, especially for anyone the relies on Giant Eagle, and could become a widespread issue. The fact that the notice is from Western Union and not from Giant Eagle makes me fear this could be wider spread than just their stores.  Only time will tell if that is true or not and we need more data points to get a better understanding of what is going on.  If you have seen a similar sign at one of your stores let us know the brand that you saw it at in the comments.

  1. I saw someone else post in the Facebook thread you linked that two grocery stores in OK is going cash only too on March 1.

  2. One of big five banks, has offices inside a local grocery chains. It common to see customers buying a WU money order. I suspect some are sending money to friends and family in another country.
