Kroger 4x
Kroger runs a 4x fuel rewards promotion several times a year. For those unfamiliar with the program, you normally get $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $100 spent a Kroger stores. During this promotion a $100 gift card purchase gives $.40 off per gallon of gas.
The nice thing about Kroger is they allow you to use Fuel Rewards for up to $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons of gas. Unfortunately this promotion doesn’t work on variable load gift cards, however it does work on fixed value Visa/MC gift cards along with almost all merchant cards.
Promotion Details
This promotion has been going for part of September, however Kroger extended it through October 4, 2014. To get the 4x points, you must load the coupon on to your loyalty card on Kroger’s website.
Tips
The best way to maximize this promotion is to get as close to 35 gallons as possible. Here are a couple of suggestions for how to do that:
- Fill up multiple cars at the same time. Just make sure not to put the handle back on the pump since that will end the transaction.
- Use fuel canisters to get extra gas and then use it to fill up other vehicles at home.
Math
If you buy a $100 Visa/MC gift card with a $5.95 fee, you will earn the points or cash back on the card you use, plus $.40 off per gallon. The break even point is about 15 gallons of gas. I use a card which pays 5% cash back at grocery stores when buying these, making it about a $13 moneymaker overall.
Conclusion
This promotion is pretty good if you have a Kroger in your area with a gas station. I happen to shop at my local Kroger and their fuel prices are the best in my area, so I will be taking advantage. Happy pumping!
