Marriott SPG Credit Card Earnings

Marriott SPG Credit Card Earnings

Today Marriott and SPG have announced that their co-branded credit cards will begin earning category bonuses across all properties. Here is how it will work according to their release:

  • Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card by American Express Card Members in the U.S. can earn two Starpoints® for every eligible dollar spent using the Card directly at hotels participating in Marriott Rewards globally.
  • Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JPMorgan Card Members in the U.S. can earn five Marriott Rewards or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards points for every eligible dollar spent using their respective Card on qualifying purchases made at participating global SPG properties.

So 2X Starpoints at Marriott properties for SPG cardholders or 5X Marriott/Ritz Carlton Rewards points at SPG properties for Marriott/Ritz cardholders.

You can find the full press release here.

Bottom Line

This is good news for members of all programs considering it adds more earning potential and a further overall integration. It’s good to see they were able to get both Chase and Amex to play along with this change and one can only wonder what will happen with the co-branded card situation once all three programs (SPG/Marriott/Ritz) merge in 2018.

  1. For some of us, AMEX Offers makes this more worthwhile. I dropped my Marriott cc a long time ago when they started to devalue the program but picked up the SPG Bus. I was using the CSP for Marriott stays until the merger.

  2. holy shit dude. this is fukn HUGE… but wait… doesnt that make the Marriott CC totally useless? I dont get it. When would I ever use the Marriott CC when staying at any SPG/Marriott property?

    • Well, its true that the Marriott card now earns 5/3 = 1.666 SPG points vs. the SPG Cards earning of 2 on an SPG stay, but lets say you just signed up for a Marriott card and are trying to complete minimum spend, then it now makes more sense than before to use that Marriott card for the SPG stay than it used to.

Other than that though, the Amex SPG card should ALWAYS be used whether you’re staying at an SPG or Marriott property I think.

      • exactly. thats what i was thinking as well. min spend or promos or anything CC specific such a elite credits or even free nights. otherwise, Amex SPG man… only game changer is 2018 when 1:3 may not be around and/or CC/pts/earning structure/etc totally changes.
