Marriott Status Extension Coronavirus
Many hotel companies such as Hyatt and Hilton were early in offering their customers more relaxed policies for cancellations and elite status. As noted in a letter from their CEO, Marriott has now made very similar moves by changing cancellation policies, extending elite status and changing points expiration policies.
Marriott Cancellation Policy Changes
Marriott is doing a lot to help customers when it comes to cancelling their reservations. As of now, any reservation made with Marriott can be cancelled with no charge up to 24 hours out. The cancellation has to be made by June 30, 2020.
For guests with existing reservations for any future arrival date, including reservations with pre-paid rates that are typically more restrictive, we will allow full changes or cancellation without a charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival, as long as the change or cancellation is made by June 30, 2020. Please note that any changes to existing reservations will be subject to availability and any rate differences.
Additionally, they are making accommodations for new reservations being made.
For guests making new reservations for any future arrival date, including reservations with pre-paid rates, between March 13 and June 30, 2020, we will allow the reservation to be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival date.
Marriott Status Extension Coronavirus – Through 2022
Marriott is also joining some of their competitoprs by extending elite status all the way through February, 2022. This is good news to for Marriott elites who are not able to spend nearly as much time in hotels this year due to the pandemic.
We want you to be able to enjoy the status that you earned in 2019. With that in mind, the status you earned in 2019 will be extended to February 2022.
Points Expiration on Pause
Marriott expires your points after your account is inactive for 24 months, however through next year they are pausing that policy! For now, points will remain active through February, 2021.
To provide you ample time to redeem points, the expiration of points will be paused until February 2021. At that time, your points will only expire if your account has been inactive for at least 24 months.

Bottom Line
Marriott may have been slower than many of their competitors in announcing these changes, but at least they got to the right place. This is great news for those loyal to Marriott and for once it feels great to not be Bonvoyed!

I know this is an older post, but wondering if Marriott is thinking about extending the free night expiration dats past Jan 31, 2021. I have 2 nights expiring then and really have no plans for travel. I know Hyatt pushed expirations out until Dec 31 2021, but Marriott has not (yet). Has anyone heard any chatter on whether they might, because if they do not I need to start planning something in the near future.
