MoviePass Makes Some Users Take Ticket Stub Photos
I received an email today from MoviePass with another negative change. The email said going forward I would need to take photos of my ticket stubs after purchase. If I forget to take the picture more than one time they have the right to close my account. This is per their new terms.
The email says that this is a beta program and only certain users are being targeted. How or why some are targeted is anyone’s guess. This is the second negative change MoviePass has made in the past week after limiting new users to 4 movies per month.
RELATED: My review of MoviePass after a month of use.
Reasons for the Change
I can only speculate but this is most likely to try to curb the abuse that has been happening in the program. I am guessing some people may have been loading a movie to the card and then purchasing a gift card or concessions with it instead.
Maybe they were doing a partial payment towards a 3D movie? I guess they could check in for one movie but purchase another movie as well. I am not sure why MoviePass would really care on that one. The cost would be the same but maybe it affects their algorithm on your likes and dislikes?
You should be able to read the full email HERE.
Conclusion
The email says that I should be prompted each time I select a movie so hopefully it is a pain free process. If it is quick and easy then no big deal but if I run into issues then it may be time to look elsewhere. Their customer service department is pretty much non existent so they better hope there are no issues.
If MoviePass is currently struggling to keep up with customer service issues who knows where they will find the people to manage this aspect. I wonder if submitting any picture will suffice :)?
Let me know your thoughts on the change in the comments section. Did you get the email as well?

well….. yayyyy. now i’m thinking what have i gotten into? i go to the show A LOT and love that i can go every day if enough shows are playing that are decent. i got the “pic your stub” notice too, and wondered why?? i’m not doing anything not allowed with the MP but i guess our word isn’t enough. we’ll see how long i keep it
Probably because you are a big user and they want to make sure you aren’t doing anything crazy with it etc. I have it too and it hasn’t been a big deal so far.
I think eventually everyone hates Movie Pass. Once you run into a problem, and you will because while their idea is good the execution is horrible, any customer service you receive will truly be awful. Thanks for the review on Sinemia. My nightmarish experience with Movie Pass led me to your site.
This is really a bunch of nonsense. There’s no way I’m signing up again; too much work for little profit. We go see movies a couple of times a month. Was hoping to get that average up with the pass, but too many hoops to jump through. Please they keep changing the rules. Meh…
Also can now only see a movie once.
Good point – not sure why they would care about that honestly. Especially if they put the limits on everyone.
I hate going to the movies; so annoying with people talking and surfing their phones. So, I now have a movie theater in my home complete with popcorn machine and concession stand. Add in a streaming device and I can watch the same movies that currently showing at the brick and mortar. Just saying…
Sounds like a good plan to me
[…] MoviePass is now requiring some users to upload photos of their ticket stubs after making a purchase. This is part of a beta program, presumably if it goes well and reduces fraud it will be implemented across all users. Hopefully they don’t plan to also add the four movie restriction to existing user accounts as well… Hat tip to Miles to Memories […]
I thought this is a miles blog, what’s the obsession with Movie Pass?
It is a travel blog that also discusses money saving deals, money making opportunities, reselling, finance and everything in between. Many of our readers are MoviePass members so it is a popular topic.
I don’t mind taking a photo if I need to but I knew the “all you can eat” was too good to be true. The first month of the program I saw 10 movies that first month. The second month I only saw 4 and the third month I didn’t use it at all as I didn’t have time. Now I just try to use it one time a month and it still pays for itself as movies at the theatre I go to are $14 per movie.
Yeah I was waiting for the shoe to drop since I signed up. I usually see around 3 movies per month which would have cost me around $20 so I am getting them half priced essentially. I do find myself going more often because it is a sunk cost which I think is also a benefit of the program. There is no prohibitive cost that kept me away from seeing just ok movies like in the past.
I never received an email about this and have an unlimited account. Just adding my data point.
I think ther new requirement sucks. I always leave my phone in my cars lockbox. Sounds like I am going to have to start taking it with me to take a stupid picture.
Unless you remember to do it when you get back to the car. Just has to be done before buying the next movie.
I received a notification on my MP app a week ago and an email. The process is quick and easy: a pop-up screen appears on the app reminding you to take a pic of your stub. And you won’t be able to purchase another movie until you submit the pic of the ticket stub. You can take a pic through the app and click the checkmark to submit it. I haven’t received any confirmation that MP has received it or any other notifications. I make it a point to take a pic of my ticket stub right then and there at the cinema otherwise I might forget. Yeah, it’s an inconvenience, but as long as MP still works, I’m content.
Glad to hear it is quick and easy!
Another reason for the rule is that fact that if you forget or miss sending in the photo 2 times, they can cancel your account. So, probably sending out the select notifications to the biggest users with the unlimited number of movies in hopes of cancelling their accounts and thus saving lots and lots of money.
Good point
