Platinum Cards Considered Unique Products

Platinum Card Varieties Are Still Considered Unique Products

As American Express announced Platinum Card changes with some added benefits and increased annual fee, there was also some doubt about welcome bonus eligibility. New language was introduced in the terms that raised some questions.

The regular Platinum and the Schwab Platinum cards have the following fine print in the terms:

Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this Card or previous versions of the Platinum Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.

This is slightly different from the previous language. While we assumed that nothing had actually changed, there was still some doubt whether this meant that you can now get only one Amex Platinum bonus per lifetime.

But now we have received confirmation from American Express that the new language doesn’t change anything. American Express’ media team said “that ‘previous’ means previous versions of the same Platinum Card. The co-branded Platinum cards are considered different products. So if you aren’t flagged for other criteria (e.g. gaming behavior), you would still be eligible for the welcome bonus.” There’s also one data point on Reddit that proves the same outcome.

So each variety of the Platinum Card is still considered a separate product and you can get the bonus once for each card.

Conclusion

This is good news. Now that we have official confirmation, you don’t need to worry about whether that welcome bonus will post once you are done with your spending requirement.

With welcome bonuses of 100K or more and 10X earning on Shop Small purchases and restaurants, you can choose between the regular Platinum Card, Schwab or Morgan Stanley. The regular Platinum card can get you the better bonus, Schwab will let you cash out points at 1.25 cents each until September, and Morgan Stanley lets you waive the annual fee of $695 if you fulfill certain requirements.

  1. How about the Resy platinum bonus … mega … 15 x spend …. Does that qualify for the bonus also?
