Platinum Delta Card Retention Call

Platinum Delta Card Retention Call

My wife’s American Express Platinum Delta card’s annual fee came due so I was looking to cancel it.  I don’t put much value into the companion pass, I feel like I would need to force myself to use it, so I didn’t think the card was worth a second annual fee.  The new Blue Delta card actually has a better earning structure and no annual fee which I find counter intuitive.

We both signed up for the card when the offer was at 70,000 Delta miles after $3000 in spend within the first 3 months.

Retention Call

I started off trying to cancel the card via chat on the American Express website.  Once I got to the end of the conversation the chat agent suggested that I call the retention department to see if there was something they could do for me.  I had not heard of people getting a retention offer for this card so that piqued my interest.  So my wife became my guinea pig.

She called and asked to cancel the card and inquired if there were any retention offers. The agent went over the perks of the card, making sure she knew about the companion pass etc., and then basically told my wife to pound sand.  My initial beliefs were confirmed, no retention offers for us on this card.

Conclusion

I didn’t really expect there to be an offer for this card with the annual companion pass perk. The American Express chat agent did get my hopes up a little bit though, only to get the door slammed in our face.  Nothing ventured nothing gained I guess.

Let me know if you have ever had a successful retention call for this card.

  1. I just called. I actually called about my mercedes platinum card and took an offer for 20K MR points after $3000 spend. Then I asked about my Delta card and was first offered $75 “or if you’d rather have miles, we could offer you 10K miles after $2000 spend”. I DO use my companion ticket every year — it’s the only credit card that let’s you fly 2 people without being one of them yourself (I never can use any of my Alaska partner tickets, such a shame). After that I was on a roll, so I called Barclays about my Lufthansa Miles & More card. They gave me 1/2 off the AF — refunded $39.50 to the account right away. Then the representative asked if I’d be interested in also getting an extra mile on all grocery, gas and utilities spend for the next 2 months, up to $8000. I said SURE, and THANK YOU!! (I won’t do that, as I’ll be putting all my spend on the Amex cards, but I thought it was very nice of her.) Turns out that my Hilton AF is due this month too, and also the Barclays Arrival card, so I’ll call them both again tomorrow.

  2. I was offered a $75 statement credit if I spent a certain amount within 3 months I believe. I still canceled the card.

  3. I had the same experience as you last week. No offers at all. They started the process of cancelling, but I didn’t go through with it.
