Question: How Can I Cancel An Avios Award Booking Online? Twitter!

Our question of the week: How can I cancel an Avios award booking online? Do I have to call and sit on hold? And what if the options they offer me when canceling online don’t make sense? Will it be more complicated if my Avios award booking is actually for flights on a partner airline? My friends, it couldn’t be easier.

The Question

Our question of the week comes from David in our Facebook group:

So, I booked an Alaska airlines flight using avios and want to cancel it because a better flight became available a week later. I know I will lose the $11 taxes and fees, which I’m okay. Question, how do you do this online. I was on hold with BA for an hour earlier today and the system hung up on me. I’m actually on hold again… SMDH. I’m logged into my BA account while on hold and there’s an option to get a voucher, but I’m unsure if I should select that feature as I booked with avios. I want to cancel and immediately book the better flight today. Has anyone had success recently canceling an avios booking?

In short: can you cancel an Avios award booking (especially for a partner flight) online to avoid waiting on hold? And what’s with this voucher?

Use Twitter!

Back in the day, I thought I was too cool for Twitter. It seemed annoying. Then, I realized how easily I can contact different companies and brands I need to interact with for whatever reason.

I previously wrote about my experience booking a flight via Twitter. That was with this very same British Airways team I’m recommending today. Here’s how this can help David (and others in the same situation).

First, you will have to cancel/accept the voucher. But it will have everything you paid (miles and cash).

Next, head to British Airways’ Twitter page. Send them a DM (direct message, private message). Let them know all of the info on your booking (reservation number, passengers, email and account number used to make the booking) and that you want to cancel to get your Avios back. They can not only help you cancel, I’ve also found them really friendly, super helpful, and they’ll explain your options.

When you’re ready to make a new booking with the voucher (the voucher will include your Avios and the money for the taxes/fees you paid, all in 1 voucher), there’s no option to ‘pay with voucher’ online. Send another DM on Twitter, and they’ll help you make the booking.

 Final Thoughts

Like David, I hate waiting on hold on the phone if something can be done. Luckily, you can cancel an Avios award booking online, just not on the British Airways website. Reach out to them on Twitter in a private message. They’ll help you cancel and even help you book new reservations when that time comes. Welcome to the future, where we book flights on Twitter!

  1. Good to know, although agents have been very good, occasionally hard to understand with a serious British accent, and very time consuming to wait on the process.
