Take Your Companion to Paradise – Southwest Adding 4 Hawaii Airports

Getting to Hawaii could soon become more affordable. Southwest Airlines announced yesterday that it will soon start flying to four cities in Hawaii, which include Honolulu (island of Oahu), Kahului (Maui), Lihue (Kauai) and Kona (Hawaii’s “Big Island”). Of these airports, Honolulu is the largest, with 26 airlines.

The news that Southwest would start flying to Hawaii was already made public back in 2017. But now we know that they will serve four destinations. Southwest didn’t reveal specific dates or routes but flight are expected to start late this year on in early 2019. They are waiting on certification to fly the Boeing 737s on the long over-water routes between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

These four destinations in Hawaii will give Southwest the most significant service expansion since it went international in 2014. They now serve numerous destinations across Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Conclusion

This is great news as it will provide more options for getting to Hawaii and likely push for more competitive prices. It is even better for those who have a Southwest Companion Pass.

We still do not know what US mainland cities will receive direct routes to Hawaii. I would expect some California airports to be on top of the list.
