- The Promotional Companion Pass is valid from January 6 to February 28, 2021 and allows you to designate one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way) on flights purchased by you from January 6 to February 28, 2021, booked through Southwest, and completed between January 6 to February 28, 2021.

The Southwest Companion Pass is gained when you earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in your account during a calendar year. Once earned, you get a pass which allows your companion to travel for free with you on both cash and points bookings. You just pay their taxes.
It is usually a good idea to earn the Southwest Companion Pass early in the year since it ca be used the rest of the calendar in which you qualify and the entire next year. So passes earned this year, are good through the end of 2020 and 2021. You can read more about the Companion Pass here.
With this promotion you only get the Southwest Companion Pass for 53 days and the dates are fixed, between 1/6-2/28/2021. So it really doesn’t matter when you earn it. You just need to register, purchase a flight by 9/24, and travel by 11/15.
