Staples Data Breach – Extent Not Yet Known
It is now widely being reported that Staples has contacted law enforcement and is looking into a possible data breach. Brian Krebs reported that several banks detected fraudulent activity that was linked to several Staples stores in the Northeastern United States.
According to Krebs the card numbers may have been stolen by malicious software that was installed at a subset of Staples locations similar to the Kmart breach.
In regards to the breach, Staples’s Senior Public Relations Manager Mark Cautela told Krebs, “We take the protection of customer information very seriously, and are working to resolve the situation. If Staples discovers an issue, it is important to note that customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on [in] a timely basis.”
As of now it isn’t apparent exactly how widespread the breach is, but Krebs believes it is isolated to a small amount of the chain’s 1,800 locations. Since a lot of my readers tend to shop at Staples quite often, I am sure this is of concern. Since the banks are the ones who identified the breach, I am sure they are monitoring everything closely. With that said, if you live in the Northeast, it may be a good idea to keep an eye out for fraudulent activity.

Yes, thanks for the heads up. I am at Staples a lot but live on the west coast, so hopefully not an issue for me.
I shop at lot at Staples here in the West as well. Hopefully it is contained, but who knows until they track down the cause. Either way, these breaches are getting old!
