Target Holiday Promotions 2016

Target is bringing back a number of their holiday initiatives this year the company has announced. Specifically they are bringing back:

  • 10% off gift cards for one day only, December 4. Last year the limit was $300 per household. No terms have been announced yet.
  • Free shipping on digital orders from October 25 through January 1, 2017.
  • 50% off one toy per day in Cartwheel from November 1 through December 24.
  • Free returns and an extended Price Match Guarantee, which enables you to price match any purchase made Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, excluding Thanksgiving through Cyber Week.
  • $10 off a $50 purchase on a different product category each week beginning in mid-November, including Grocery, Home, Apparel and Accessories, Trim and Toys.In December it becomes $25 off $100.

You can find the full details in their press release.

Maximizing

Target Holiday Promotions 2016

There is a lot of opportunity to save with these promotions and those who like to resell may find a deal or two as well, although scaling can be difficult. As for the discounted gift cards, it can be nice to stock up at 10% off, but they will enforce that household limit. Some got around that limit by visiting multiple stores, etc. during the promotion last year.

Remember too that you can always get 5% off by using a REDcard so between the discount on gift cards and REDcard you are starting at 15% off before factoring in any other deals and/or promos. I’ll cover the gift card terms as the deal gets closer to see if anything has changed significantly from last year.

  1. Too bad I’m banned from target.com for the thousands in ebay gift cards purchased over the last 1-2 years. I’d still do it again in a heartbeat, mainly because there’s a store nearby and I use Amazon most of the time for anything needing to be shipped. Still sucks when I see these type of deals roll around!

      • In theory, absolutely nothing. In reality, baby #2 due to arrive Nov 3rd will keep me on my toes. Even so, I won’t bite on this offer for the simple fact that it’s not worth going to Target (in my case) on this 1 day.

I don’t find this deal THAT great. Sure, its a decent deal but it’s also capped at $300 (assuming it’s going to be a similar cap) and it’s really only a 5% increase considering it’s easy to get 5% at Target at all times. Thus I look at this as a way to make/save $15 with plenty of hoops to consider.

Not to get even further down the rabbit hole but you do need to factor in your value of time, $300 spent elsewhere and mental CPU to keep track of said gift cards. If you do drive to the store and weren’t planning a trip, well, there’s your wear and tear and gas too. Plus I bet the store will be pretty busy… oh fun times! It’s a good ploy to get people into Target though. Am I overthinking it? Yup. Either way, the value is YMMV.

  2. “Remember too that you can always get 5% off by using a REDcard so between the discount on gift cards and REDcard you are starting at 15% off…”

When using a Target giftcard and REDcard together, the REDcard 5% only applies to the amount paid by REDcard, not to anything paid by giftcards – and there’s no 5% discount on purchasing giftcards either. It wouldn’t be a 15% discount, just between 5-10% depending on how big a giftcard you get, and how much you charge to the REDcard.

    • This is not correct. As long as the red card is your primary payment choice in your account, you can pay 100% with a gift card and get the 5%. I’ve been doing it for several years.

        • Correct. I was just trying to keep it down here in the comments instead of blasting it in the post which is why I just casually mentioned it, although it is a fairly well known trick.

          • Good to know! Thanks all. I knew it prorated the discount in store, didn’t know about it stacking online. Going to start using those free $5 giftcards I get in store online instead then!
