Day 330 – Saturday March 15, 2008 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
This day was actually very non-eventful. Instead of waking up early like we should have, we didn’t get out of the room until around 10am. To get to the Petronas Towers from the hotel we had to take the KL Monorail two stops and then walk around ten minutes. By the time we finally reached the base of the marvelous buildings it was 11am. I was hoping we weren’t too late for tickets to get up to the the Skybridge.
We quickly entered the marble decorated lobby and asked a security guard where to go for tickets. He directed us to an escalator that led to the basement. Once in the basement, a sign said tickets were available for 4:15pm. We waited for five minutes and when we got to the counter the lady handed us tickets for 4:45pm. Unfortunately, we had just missed the earlier tour.
The Petronas Towers are part of a much larger complex that consists of several buildings, a park, theater and a seven story shopping mall. We had nearly six hours to kill and with the weather outside being incredibly hot, we would spend most of it in the mall. Inside the mall we ate lunch at the massive food court, before exploring the many levels of
Around 1pm we decided to walk five minutes over to the Malaysia Tourist Information Center to get some information on tours and transportation. The information center had free internet so we spent a few minutes checking email and reading the news before heading back to the mall.
By 3pm we were bored and decided to check out the movie theater. Thankfully we discovered that the Spiderwick Chronicles were playing at 5:30pm. This showing worked perfect for us given our tour time, so we bought the tickets. By this time in the evening the mall was packed. Every minute that passed seemed to bring hundreds of more people into the area. It is obvious that this is the cool place to hang out on a Saturday.
Finally at 4:30pm we headed back downstairs to start our tour. At 4:40pm the twenty or so people in our group were ushered into a small theater where we were shown a 3D film mostly about the Petronas Oil Company who is the namesake of the building. Petronas is the national oil company of Malaysia and they help to keep gasoline prices cheap in the developing nation.
Following the film, we headed to a large industrial elevator where we proceeded to the 41st story skybridge that links the two buildings together. Our guide told us we had eight minutes to enjoy the bridge. Just as we walked onto the bridge, rain started to come down in droves. This is just how the weather is here in Malaysia. One minute everything is fine and the next, rain is pouring down. Unfortunately for us, our views were greatly diminished by this.
The first five of our eight minutes were spent taking various pictures. We took pictures by ourselves, of the buildings surrounding the towers and asked the guide to take a picture
As I mentioned before, our tour ended and we headed straight for the cinemas. The movie was great and afterwards we decided to eat at Chili’s to celebrate. We have been away from home for a while, so I guess we deserve to have a taste of home. In heading back to the hotel we saw a man have his expensive camera snatched away. This is a reality here in Malaysia. While violent crime is very low, pickpockets and purse snatchers are very common.
We arrived back at the hotel around 10pm. Since the monorail station is literally two minutes from the hotel, being out at night feels safe. Our hotel is in a seedy part of town though, meaning there aren’t many criminals, but quite a few prostitutes. Tomorrow is my birthday and we are going to visit the Batu Caves, which house a Hindu Temple and a whole lot of monkeys. It sounds like a lot of fun!
We want to thank everyone for the comments and emails. Your support is truly appreciated and keeps us going.
