TSA Testing Remote Security Screening
The TSA has officially launched a new pilot program that allows some travelers to complete airport security screening before they even arrive at Boston Logan International Airport.
The program, which began on June 1, is quite limited for now and operates from a remote terminal in Framingham, Massachusetts. Passengers flying JetBlue or Delta from Boston Logan between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. can check in, drop off bags, clear TSA screening and then board a secure shuttle directly to the post-security side of the airport.
The service costs $9 per passenger, while parking at the Framingham facility is available for $7 per day. Children under 18 can ride free when traveling with a ticketed adult.
The Boston project is part of TSA’s broader effort to test remote passenger screening through its Reimbursable Screening Services Program. Massport and TSA describe the Framingham facility as the first U.S. remote terminal that allows passengers to complete screening off-airport and then travel directly to the secure side of an airport terminal.
The pilot could be expanded to Los Angeles, Atlanta, and JFK International Airports soon.
