AAdvantage Reduced Mileage Awards Summer 2015

American Airlines has a very good program for holders of their various co-branded credit cards issued by Citi & Barclay’s. Called “Reduced mileage awards”, the program allows you to save up to 7,500 miles on roundtrip award travel to select cities. (Or 3,750 one-way.)

As you might have guessed, usually the cities on the list generally aren’t that interesting, but this time that isn’t necessarily the case. American Airlines has released the list of cities for the next 4 months and there are definitely some standouts. Among them are:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Detroit, MI
  • Tampa, FL
  • Hartford, CT
  • Houston Intercontinental
  • Pittsburgh, PA

There are a ton of smaller cities available as well. The catch is that not all cities are available for every month. To see which cities are discounted when, simply head over to their page and poke around.

How to Book

Unfortunately these discounted award fares cannot be booked online. To book an award, you have to call 1-800-882-8880 and mention the promo code that corresponds to your card. (Found on the promo page.) Thankfully American no longer charges phone booking fees for awards that cannot be purchased online.

Conclusion

I’m heading to Michigan in July, so I will be taking advantage of the discounted rate to Detroit. Paying only 17,500 miles roundtrip can be a fantastic deal, especially if you are traveling across the country. How about you? Do any of these cities/dates correspond to your travel plans? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Saw Portland, OR on there for this month, and New Orleans for June and July. Thought those were pretty good too. Now if only my Aviator Red would come… :-/
