Is Amex Giving Some Business Platinum Cardmembers Extra Dell Credits?

Last year American Express rolled out some amazing credits for Platinum cardholders.  They did this for the personal card as well as the business version.  The credits for the business version included up to an additional $200 in Dell credits for card members.  This credit was broken down into two segments, from May 1st through June 30th and from July 1st through December 31st. These credits also stacked with the $100 Dell credits you already get as a cardmember, so $200 in total was available during each time frame. The extra Dell credits were supposed to end in 2020 but it appears Amex is still giving some cardmembers the additional credits in error. This happens at the same time that people are randomly getting Hilton free night certs.

What Is Going On?

Jared, one of our Facebook Group members, shared an interesting data point on his Amex Business Platinum. He was team Mark, and decided to hit up his credits first thing in the year like I suggest everyone does.  He wanted to use his $100 in Dell credit that is available from January 1st through June 30th for all cardmembers.  His purchase was for $160, $60 more than the credit.  He figured he would get the $100 credit, per usual, and then pay the extra $60. Except, his statement showed a credit for the full $160 amount.

This led him to wondering if the extra $100 Dell credit had been extended into 2021.  It would make sense since the personal Platinum recently added a $30 a month PayPal credit.  With this news, one would figure something was coming for the Business Platinum as well. After yesterday’s announcement we found out that the additional perks are increased earning rates via Amex Offers instead of statement credits.

Jared reached out to Amex via chat and they informed him that the additional credit was an error. That will likely lead to a clawback in a year or two, hopefully they don’t take more than they are supposed to this time around.

Final Thoughts

It seems like there are a few glitches out there right now from Amex, this and the Hilton free night certs.  It could be a bumpy ride for the next few weeks as American Express gets their stuff together in 2021. If you end up getting a double Dell credit on your Business Platinum card it looks like it is an error and it will likely lead to a clawback in the future. Unfortunately, there really isn’t any way to avoid it if you make a Dell purchase to use your $100 credit.  If you end up getting credited for the amount over $100 let us know in the comments.
