The Hardest Landing Evar!

I am back in Amsterdam for two hours before finally making my way to Hong Kong. If you haven’t been following along on TwitterFacebook or Instagram (I post a lot of photos) my travels the past few weeks have been: LAS-IAD train to JFK-MXP-LUX train to BRU train to AMS-LHR-PRG-AMS-HKG.

Yeah the whole AMS-LHR-PRG-AMS doesn’t make any sense. I waited too long to book and connecting in London ended up being the cheapest way. The mistake fare I booked is from PRG-HKG via AMS, meaning I had to start the journey in Prague. If only they let you drop the first part of the ticket!

My flight from Prague to Amsterdam was on an E190. This is a small regional jet which seats two people on each side of the aisle. Anyway, the flight went perfectly. No turbulence and a beautiful descent into Amsterdam at dusk. Who could ask for anything more?

Well, apparently someone, because when we landed, the jet hit the runway so hard that it felt like the bottom must have slammed into the pavement. Everyone on board gasped loudly and then slightly after we touched down the jet swerved considerably to the right and the pilot SLAMMED on the brakes!

I have been lucky to never have experienced anything too crazy during flight. Somehow I have avoided the worst types of turbulence and really have no horror stories to tell. This is far from a horror story, but I could see less experienced travelers being freaked out. Just in case you think I am exaggerating, the pilot came on the PA just after landing and apologized to everyone.

Free $150 From AT&T & Amex Offers

Amex Offers ATT
Flying over Amsterdam. So much water.

Since I am about to take off, I don’t have a lot of time to write about this, but Amex Offers has a targeted promotion offering $150 off $150 at AT&T. (Yes $150 in FREE money!) Apparently it only applies towards Open Business cards and it can’t be used for equipment and services that don’t appear on our bill.

Running with Miles has all of the details of the offer along with ways to maximize it. I highly suggest heading over there if you find it in your account(s) and register as soon as possible since enrollment is limited. Unfortunately I wasn’t targeted, but I hope you have better luck.

Approach into Amsterdam

I am off to Hong Kong tonight and will be taking the ferry over to Macau directly from the airport. After spending one night in the “Vegas of the East”, I will be spending a few nights in Hong Kong before flying back to the U.S. in Cathay Pacific first class. Life isn’t terrible that is for sure.

So as I have now shared my “horror” (not really) story, tell me about your scariest flight experience. Whoever has the scariest story (as judged by me) will win a Gogo internet pass. Good luck!

  1. The scariest flight was from Kona Hawaii back to Seattle. We flew through a horrible storm over the Pacific Ocean almost the entire flight! Turbulence for hours is NOT FUN :/

  2. I once flew from Yakima WA to Seattle in a 10 seater. The copilot made sure we were buckled into our seats and off we took off THROUGH the cascade mountains in a thunderstorm! I don’t know how many times we dipped and lost altitude, but the landing in that storm in Seattle was my worst ever. The entire group of passengers ran, en masse, to the bar where we all bought each other drinks!

  3. My scariest flight experience was the moment I sat down on the plane the one time I flew Spirit Airlines. I’m 6’4″, and at that point realized how uncomfortable I would be for the next few hours!

  4. One time, I was on a First Class award and got seated in coach. Truly terrifying.

Oh yeah…on that same flight, we hit some turbulence and unwillingly descended 1500 feet, according to the polls.
