How Does 4X on Grocery & Restaurants Sound? Amex PRG Has You Covered

Those who have the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card got a nice surprise today from Amex. If you’re logged into your account online you can see some enhancements made to the card. There’s new earning rates and annual dining credit, that make this card an instant contender an Amex slot.

American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card Changes

The card is showing the following changes:

  • $120 Dining Credit – $10 monthly dining credit available at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Shake & Shack. Must enroll first and pay using Premier Rewards Gold card.
  • 4X points at US restaurant
  • 4X points at US supermarkets, up to $25K purchases per calendar year.

One benefit has been removed:

  • No more 2X points at US gas stations

Analysis

$120 in dining credit alongside the $100 Airline Fee reimbursement, already take care of the $195 fee. That alone makes it a possible long term card for many people.

Then you have the increased earning rates. 4X at US restaurants is the best rate out there, since you’re earning Membership Rewards points. 4X at supermarkets is also a very good rate, but limited to only $25K per calendar year.

One issue with these enhancements is that they are not yet showing on the application page. Those who have the card are seeing it in the accounts online. But even for cardholders I believe is not showing up for everyone. I reached out to Amex and they responded that they “do not have any updates to this Card to share.”

Could be that they jumped the gun with the release.

Conclusion

Hopefully these enhancements are here to stay. It will definitely make this card a contender for a spot in your wallet. The card usually has a 50,000 Membership Rewards welcome offer and the annual fee of $195 is waived the first year.

Do you have the card? Let us know if you see the new rates. If you’re not a cardholder, does it now become a must have card?

  1. AMEX: “As part of regular testing to our website some card members saw test materials in their Amex online account. We do not have any changes to our cards at this time”

  2. For what it’s worth, I just got off the phone with a rep and he was unaware of any new benefits. Could this be a test for certain card holders?
Care to do a screen shot for us of these new benefits?

  3. Does anyone know if Fred Meyers and Target will be coded as grocery stores or as my experience has been with the BCP coded as super stores. Thus was the reason I cancelled my BCP.
