Amex Uber Credit

Happy November!  In a matter of hours, we’ve moved from Halloween to the Holidays.  There hardly seems to be time for Thanksgiving anymore.  But it’s hard to determine if we should be grateful for the soon-to-change Amex Uber credit benefit on the Gold and Platinum.  However, I noticed a possible clue this morning on the future of this benefit.  Let’s take a look at the situation now.

Update (2:26 pm ET):  I’ve received one Amex Platinum Uber Credit in my account but am awaiting several more.

The Latest on the Amex Platinum Uber Credit

DDG wrote about the first announcement here.  The Amex Platinum Uber Credit landing page now states the following in the terms:

Effective November 8th, 2024, in addition to having Uber Cash toggled on, an American Express Card must be selected as the payment method for your transaction in the Uber or Uber Eats apps to redeem Uber Cash received through the Amex Benefit.

Among my usual first of the month chores, I check that monthly Uber credits have loaded to my account.  But today, I quickly noticed that only the $10 Amex Gold Uber credits have appeared in my account.  There are no signs of Platinum credits.  DDG and multiple MtM Diamond members are experiencing the same.  The lack of Amex Platinum Uber credits in our Uber wallets indicates how this benefit may change moving forward.

Interestingly, there is no mention of the upcoming changes on the Amex Gold Uber Credit landing page.

My Take

A Quick Reset

Many hobbyists have been uncertain since Amex made the vague announcement initially.  Would these credits continue in the form of monthly wallet credits?  Or would it work more like the Amex Gold dining credit where the card would actually need to be used to receive the benefit?  Many have feared the latter.

We’ve historically been able to aggregate Amex Gold and Platinum Uber credits along with Uber wallet balance, and the Amex benefits played well together.  Cardholders use Gold and Platinum credits first, then existing Uber wallet balance.

By requiring an Amex as the default card payment method, is Amex saying we’ll actually need to make a purchase with each card in order to receive the credit?  This could be substantially more inconvenient for many.  Or is it simply one must have an Amex card set as the default card for payment after Uber wallet is used, like many of us have now?  While I prefer the latter, I honestly haven’t given it too much thought since the first announcement.

Considering This Clue

The Amex Platinum Uber Credit not posting as usual on the first of the month could possibly indicate that Platinum cardholders might need to actually use their cards to receive the credit.  But if that’s the case, why did Gold cardholders receive the monthly $10 Amex Gold Uber Credit today in their accounts?  It seems odd that two Amex cards handle the same type of benefit differently.

But maybe that’s the case.  As I described above, the current Platinum benefit contains verbiage on the update, but not the Gold.  Another possibility is that these Amex Platinum Uber Credits are just slow to post to Uber accounts on the first of the month.  We’ve seen this happen before, but the upcoming changes on 8 November make us consider other factors.  We also can’t ignore the Platinum terms referring to “having Uber Cash toggled on” and how that may play into any changes.

Conclusion

A reddit post notes the possibility to receive the Platinum credits today by unlinking and relinking their Platinum cards to Uber.  Bigger picture, though, neither option I discussed above is a huge change, and some might consider paying for Uber with a Platinum card an improved benefit.  Theoretically, cardholders could just load $15 to their Uber wallets with each of their Platinum cards.  Each credit would no longer be bound to the monthly use limitation.  If that’s the case, I’m all for that changing on the Gold, too.  I’m okay with that minor time inconvenience to unlock these credits indefinitely.

But I’ll stop there for now.  We’ll see what develops between now and then.  Regardless, in one week, we’ll have more clarity on exactly how Amex will handle Uber benefits on the Gold and Platinum.

What’s your take on these upcoming changes?

  1. Same happened to me I have 2 AMEX PLT on my uber, and I I only see $15 today. So I removed 2nd AMEX PLT and re-register and boom. Now $30 credit showing on my account. Thanks ! I have been wondering what is going on for all morning.

  2. I have (between my spouse and me) 2 Platinum and 1 Gold in my Uber wallet, so used to get $40/month. Today, I noticed I only had $25 – $15 for one of the Platinums and $10 for the Gold. I played around some with making both Platinums Preferred method of payment (couldn’t figure out which one was the issue, and originally neither one of the 3 was actually my Preferred method of payment) and at some point I finally saw $40 in my Wallet.
