Barclays Spend Offers

Barclays Spend Offers

I recently described the excellent welcome offers available on the new Gap family of credit cards from Barclays.  But the big question I brought up in that article was this: would the lucrative ongoing spend offers return?  After all, existing cardholders from the Synchrony Bank days grew to love these generous offers.  My wife and I are in that group with our Banana Republic cards, freshly converted to the Barclays version.  It turns out we didn’t have to wait too long for the Barclays spend offers answer.

Barclays Spend Offers on Banana Republic Cards

A Diamond Lounge member shared his Barclays spend offer discovery.  Barclays targeted me for the same offer, but my wife wasn’t, unfortunately.  Here’s the offer we received:

Earn 5x points at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, in addition to travel purchases from 15 Jul through 30 Sep 2022.

Points are worth 1 cent per point when redeemed at the Gap family of stores (and yes, redemptions are limited to these brands).  Although, this past weekend, Banana Republic Icon members received redemption values of 2 cents per point on their “Double Reward Day.”  Earning 5% back in rewards, at a minimum, in these categories is undeniably solid.

How To Find These Offers

After logging into your Barclays account, targeted individuals will find the offer on the far right of the Banana Republic card menu bar (on the desktop site).  After a cardholder clicks “Offers”, an offer summary will appear.  Click “Select Offer” for the full details (similar to above).  The Diamond Lounge member was able to find his offer on the Barclays phone app.

My Initial Take

My first thought on this offer is that it’s similarly generous as previous Synchrony versions.  The bonus spend options are in staple categories of grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants.  Earning 5x on travel purchases is a nice inclusion, as well.  Even better, cardholders have two and a half months to maximize earning.

A few questions remain.  Are Gap, Old Navy, and Athleta cardholders receiving Barclays spend offers?  Our data points are only on the Banana Republic cards so far.  It would be a natural assumption to think those other cardholders may see similar offers, but you know what they say about assumptions.  If you hold one of these other cards and you’ve been targeted, let us know in the comments.  Also, could cardholders in their current welcome offer period of these cards be targeted for this spend offer, as well?  If so, do the welcome offer and spend offer stack?  My hunch is the answer to both of these questions is no, but we’ll have to wait and see.  Again, we appreciate anything you can share in the comments.

Conclusion

I’m encouraged by this positive development regarding Barclays spend offers on the Gap family of cards.  In my view, the full transition of these cards from Synchrony to Barclays is one more step closer to complete.  The continuation of spend offers has made these cards just as valuable with Barclays as they were with Synchrony, if not more.  When most everything seems to be devaluing, it’s nice to see something stray from that norm.  Did you receive an offer?  If so, what are the terms?
