What Is Going On? Chase Is Doing Two Hard Pulls For Applications
Our friends over at Travel On Points have a few reports in their Facebook Group of people getting 2 hard pulls when applying for a Chase card. With the recent increase of applications for the Chase Freedom Unlimited & Freedom cards this is hitting many people’s reports unexpectedly. I have had Chase pull 2 bureaus in the past for my applications but never have I seen two hard pulls from the same bureau for one card.
Update: Also happening with credit line increase requests per Travel Rewards Warrior.
Why Is This Happening & What Does It Mean?
To be honest I have no idea what is going on. My guess would be that Chase has some type of processing error or glitch on their end that is causing the double pull. Hopefully they get it corrected soon so their cardmembers are not unfairly punished for something they have no control over.
As far as what this means, your credit score will take a small dip for the extra hard pull. Usually it is 10 points or less per hard pull, which isn’t a huge deal. Hopefully Chase catches onto the error or enough people alert them to it and they correct it. Then they should proactively remove one of the hard pulls. If they don’t you can dispute one of them but it is a hassle that I imagine some of you will think is not worth the effort.
Final Thoughts
I thought I would share the news and big thanks to Derrick at Travel on Points for the heads up on this. If you were planning on applying for a Chase card you may wanna wait a few days and see if the dust settles. If you were caught up in the error it isn’t the end of the world but it is annoying. Hopefully Chase does the right thing and corrects the error by removing the second pull from credit reports.
If I needed to sign up for a Chase card today for some reason would this stop me? No it wouldn’t, but if you are not in a rush I would stand pat for a few days and see how it shakes out.

I recently applied for the Bonvoy Boundless card and I did get instant approval, however I also see a double hard pull on my Experian report. Its for the same day and the same lender (JPMCB).
I’m glad to know i’m not alone and I have sent a secured message to Chase. Lets see what happens.
I log into my Chase account and I see a special offer for you Chase Freedom Unlimited. 5% back on groceries, and since it comes up when I log in, I figure it must be pre-approved. I have gotten 2 Visa cards in the last 3 years, so that should not be an issue. Boom 2 Experian hard pulls and one soft pull. My score goes from 809 to 789 just like that! Denied. Too many inquiries, Balances too high ($400 on almost 100k of credit) Call to the reconsideration line goes nowhere. Will try again in a day or two now that I got the letter. WTF . Wish I had seen this thread before I did that. Twenty points takes a while to get back.
Remember that 5/24 is based on all cards not just Visa. So you have to include MasterCard and Amex etc. into your applications to get the real number.
Happened to me when I applied for the United card. It delayed the approval and I had to call customer service. Pulled Experian twice. I haven’t seen the impact to my credit score yet.
Yes this is happening. Wife is 2/24 & applied for the unlimited last week. Experian was pulled twice in the same day and she was denied for, wait for it…. “Too many recent reviews of your credit.” Called recon a few days later and got it approved, but of course they pulled her credit AGAIN. At least 3 hard pulls for one Freedom Unlimited card, what clowns.
That is criminal – hopefully you can get them to reverse them.
We refinanced a $250k mortgage and only got one pull (granted all 3 bureaus), a Chase Freedom Unlimited that we had to reallocate CL from another card (so no new credit) with an 857 Experian, 6 figure income, 1% utilization & 2/24? Yeah Chase needs to see that report at least 3 times.
Folks PLEASE READ the article. Mark has mentioned that they’re pulling the SAME report twice which is pointless as they’ll get the SAME information as the first time. The rub is that the applicant ends up with a useless pull on their report. Chase needs to fix the glitch and then proceed to remove the second inquiry they’re nailing folks with.
Continuing to post that “they’ve always done that” just proves that you’re not reading and just making an assumption from the article headline.
These comments are proof that people just do not read. Maybe you need to bold the last line of the first paragraph.
Done 🙂
@WA Exactly. They just skim the headline and then in their typical keyboard ninja style, start posting that “they’ve always did that”…or get upon their high horse and start alluding to Chase protecting themselves from debt default.
During this time of economic uncertainty credit card issuers (and all lenders) are worried about defaults. That is why you see credit limits reduced, accounts closed, tighter underwriting standards and more diligence on credit worthiness.
This may be a game for you and many on here but it is their business. No reason for you to complain about them being careful. Obviously if you don’t like it you don’t need to apply for a credit card!
Pulling the same credit report does nothing AC – it is the same report.
AC,
Does your bitterness ever take a day off?
At least, for the first time in memory, he didn’t comment about his Caesar’s status and how quickly he achieved it.
This has happened on and off for years to me and I thought it was more common in certain states. In applying for *one* card with Chase I have often (but not always) seen pulls on Exp and Eq. This was a few years ago and the last app I did, this did not happen (my only app with Chase in the last couple of years). Citi has done this to me as well. Also does anybody really care about pulls anymore with all the other limits?
This is from the same bureau not two different ones. They are pulling the same report twice.
Or maybe they are doing it to get a more accurate and complete picture of the applicant – cause we all know each of the bureaus doesn’t have the same exact info on a person. When you apply for a mortgage they pull all 3 because they want the total picture of an applicant. I don’t see a problem with pulling from multiple bureaus.
This is from the same Bureau not multiple ones.
