Discover Grocery Bonus Offer

Discover Grocery Bonus Offer

Discover has released a new offer for their cardholders offering up to 4% cashback at grocery stores through the end of September, 2016.

Update: Some people have reported not seeing this offer so it may be targeted.

The Offer

Sign up to earn 2% Cashback Bonus on up to $500 in monthly purchases made at stand-alone Grocery Stores and Supermarkets now through 09/30/2016.

  • Grocery purchases made at convenience stores, gas stations, warehouse clubs, supercenters, discount stores (or at grocery stores associated with supercenters or discount stores) are not eligible.
  • Purchases made using tap-and-pay, mobile or wireless card readers, virtual wallets or similar technology may not be eligible.

Loading the Offer

To load this offer to your account, simply log-in and look towards the right hand side. You will see the offer listed under your normal 5% bonus category offer. You must activate it to earn the bonus cashback.

Discover Grocery Bonus Offer

If you have the Double Cashback promotion then this would amount to 4% cashback on grocery purchases after the doubling. One simple thing to do would be to purchase a $500 Visa/MC gift card for $505.95 each month. That would earn $20 cash back after doubling or about a $14 profit. Of course, it is best to use this card for actual groceries if you don’t have a card that earns a better return at grocery stores.

As a reminder the Chase Freedom card is currently paying 5X at grocery & warehouse stores on up to $1,500 in purchases through the end of June. That is a better offer overall, but since both of these offers are capped, I suspect many of you will have the additional bandwidth to maximize both.

This is a good offer considering it comes in addition to the normal 5% bonus categories this quarter. This really only makes sense if you have Double Cashback on your account, since you can get 2% everywhere from a number of other cards.

Were you targeted? Did you get a different offer? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Regarding the “Purchases made using tap-and-pay, mobile or wireless card readers, virtual wallets or similar technology may not be eligible. ” I noticed that on the quarterly rewards as well. What’s the general consensus here? Does using Discover IT with Apple Pay typically make the purchase eligible for bonus rewards or not? Thanks

    • It has generally worked in the past, but they have added this language to most offers lately since some stores code differently when using tap and pay. In short, it should work, but Discover has given themselves an out if it doesn’t.

  2. It’s on my More card, which isn’t double cashback. However, its nice to have another option for 2% for the VGC…just in case.

    • why do I have to click 3x to get to your articles? BTW Stop&Shop/Hannafords/Acme no longer sell the 500.00 VGC with a cc. Probably why they did this offer.

      • Hi Barry. Can you explain needing to click three times? That shouldn’t be happening. Thanks for the info on the stores. The $500 cards definitely aren’t as widespread as they used to be.

  3. Not on my DISC either. Honestly, it would matter more if CHASE didn’t already have groceries as the 5% cashback category this quarter. BUT… not everyone has a Freedom card, or they may max out their bonus if they do. In that situation, and assuming they receive the DISC offer, it’s a great option while their DISC 2X is still in effect.

  4. not on my discover It; instead on the More but that acct. is not eligible for double. oh well, a $500 VGC is for a gain of $4; enough $ for a breakfast or light lunch…

    • That really varies by region, but you are correct some of the big chains have removed them. I do believe Kroger stores in most areas still allow it as do regional chains in many places.
