Discover Q1 2016 Bonus Categories

One of the best tricks in the credit card space is to utilize the rotating categories on cards like the Discover It, Chase Freedom (my review) and Citi Dividend. Of course the companies don’t always make it easy to maximize, since some categories are easier to spend in than others.

Discover has just released the details of their Q1 2016 bonus categories. As you can see below, they will be paying 5% cash back on gas and ground transportation purchases from January-March, 2016. I personally find that gas is one of the easier categories to maximize since it is an everyday expense and gas stations sell a nice variety of merchandise as well!

10% with Double Cashback

Most Discover It cardholders should also have the Double Cashback promotion on their accounts. This means that the 5% earned on Gas & Ground Transportation should be doubled at the end of your promotional year. Remember that a lot of gas stations sell various gift cards. Some even sell pin-enabled Visa gift cards, although they aren’t always easy to find and a lot of stations won’t accept credit cards.

Conclusion

As of now neither Chase nor Citi have released any 2016 5% category details. In the past the full calendars for each of these cards has generally been released around the beginning of December and I will certainly cover them when that happens. For now, the Discover category news is good and I suspect that many of you will earn the full 10% back on up to $1,500 in purchases in Q1 2016.

  1. It’s interesting to look at the titlebar of the webpage when you click on each of the blocks in the carousel (APR-JUNE 2016, JULY-SEPT 2016…) on Discover’s 5% Cashback page 😉
