Discover Targeted Spending Offers

I really love my Discover It card (my review) because of the rotating 5% categories and their portal. Unfortunately the categories this quarter are restaurants and movies. As you may have noticed, the restaurants category overlaps with the Chase Freedom card (my review), so I am struggling to maximize and thus my Discover It card is collecting dust.

About a month ago I read over at Doctor of Credit that some people were able to get spending offers added to their accounts by asking via secure message. Today I finally got around to asking, although I decided to hop on chat to see what was available.

The Offers

My Offer

First, I hopped on chat with my nearly year old Discover It account. I haven’t really used it other than for 5% categories and to meet the minimum spend for the $150 sign-up bonus I received. The agent was very friendly and said he only had one offer available for me at this time.

The offer was $10 cashback after $100 in spending in the next 30 days. Since I already receive 1% back on regular purchases, this is an 11% return or 15% if I use the card at restaurants, which is probably my preferred option. I think I’ll slip the Discover It card back in my wallet and try to find a Bed Bath & Beyond to use my Freedom card at.

My Wife’s Offer

Next, my wife hopped on chat for her nearly two year old account. At first the agent said there were several offers available and then she went on to tell her about how she could make $50 for referring someone and about the 5% bonus categories. FAIL!

Obviously those aren’t really offers at all. The 5% categories are a FEATURE of the card and the referral $50 is available to everyone and is always around. I wish she had just said there are no offers, which in my opinion is the truth. After failing on chat, my wife sent a secure message as well, but the answer was the same.

Other Possible Offers

Here are some other offers that may be available according to the original Doctor of Credit post:

  • $10 after spending $200 dollars in the next 30 days. (Worse than mine.)
  • $20 or $30 back after spending $1,000 in the next 30 days.
  • 2% back on all purchases for a limited time.
  • 0% purchase APR for the next 12 months.

How to Chat or Send a Secure Message

Thankfully Discover makes it really easy to hop on a chat or to send a secure message. Luckily both options are contained in the same place. Here is how to find them:

First scroll to the bottom of the page after logging in and click on “Help Center”.

On the right hand side under “Contact us” you will see both options available. You can either click “Chat Live Now” to get on chat or “Send a Secure E-mail” to ask via secure message.

Conclusion

We aren’t talking about huge money here, but I’ll take an extra 10% on my next $100 in purchases. While I wish my wife was able to get an offer, perhaps in the future she will get an offer and I will get shot down.

  1. They offered me $10 on $100 in purchases then I asked for another option and then they offered 0% interest on purchases for a whole year so I took that instead…

    • The 0% offer isn’t bad if you plan on carrying a balance. I have a low credit line of my Discover It and don’t carry balances, so it wouldn’t work for me. Still a great offer though!

  2. Question for everyone here:

Have you received any spend $xx for xx months and get $xx cash bonus? I’m referring to the ones that are $100+ cash bonus offers.

I had this offer early last year, but nothing since. My Discover card is collecting a lot of dust too, so hopefully they offer me something.

I’ll see what they offer me via chat. Will be entertainment at the very least if they try to slowroll me with public offers.

    • Last year both my wife and I had offers like that. Mine was spend 2k/month for like 8 months and get an extra $300 cash back. My wife’s was spend 1.5k/month for 6 months get $200 extra cash back. Was pretty easy to accomplish with MS (Amazon payments was still available).

      • I loved Amazon Payments for small MS like that. For this offer, I probably would’ve just done the $100 right away with Amazon Payments, but alas that options is now gone. Weep weep.

  3. I did that as well. I was told there were no offers on my account but since I’ve had a great payment history. I was given $10 cash back for no spend. I opened the card in December with the $150 bonus. I’ll take it!

  4. When i asked, i was told he has a fantastic offer for me and it is $75 offer.

Asked what that is and told me if you spend $1500 at restaurants until end of june, he will give me $75.

told him it is a fake offer and it is public and it is the category 5% back.
