Eviña Terrón is a Spanish blogger whose sense of adventure inspires me.  She is one of the friendliest people I have ever met and her love of travel and different cultures shines through in her writing.

Eviña writes Una idea un viaje which in English means, “An idea a trip”. She has been sharing stories from her travels since 2012 and shows no signs of slowing down. With an around the world trip coming up in November, I am sure she will not have a shortage of new experiences to write about! On to the interview!

How long have you been writing/blogging about travel and why did you start? How has your writing changed since you began?

It has been almost 2 years since I started blogging. I started while I was preparing my trip to Indonesia. I made a big effort to prepare it, so I thought it was a great time to share! And that was the beginning. I don’t think my writing has changed much. Actually, I’m a very passionate writer, so I just spit out my feelings.

What was your first memorable travel experience/trip? What made it so memorable?

I have to say it was in 1989. That summer, my grandpa took me and my cousin on a roadtrip to Portugal. It was amazing. On July 25th we reached Lisbon and for the first time in my life, I took a boat, traveled by metro and by plane. That is something I will never forget!

What was the most disastrous day you spent on the road? How do you cope when everything seemingly goes wrong while traveling?

I could tell you when I first landed in Greece, ready to live there for six months and I didn’t know there was a time shift. I missed the train that I was supposed to take and waited four hours for the next one. Since it happened that there was a strike, the train was so crowded that I spent six hours standing in the middle of the crowd.

When I arrived to Thessaloniki in the north, I went to a hostel, but it was fully booked. The guy there told me that everything was booked in the city that weekend due to a congress so he recommended that I sleep in the bus station since I had to catch a bus the next morning.

So I was at the bus stop and waited for another bus to go to the station… And waited there for 2 hours!! Rainy, cold (yes, in Greece!!)… A guy showed up, so I asked him and he told me that maybe in an hour or so the bus would come. We waited together, I told him my sad misfortunes and when the bus came he offered to wait with me at the bus station. We grabbed a coffee and stayed there talking until 7 in the morning! I cannot remember his name, but, hey, if you ever read me… THANKS for the company! 😀

Can you tell me what makes your blog unique? What is a great blog post that showcases this uniqueness?

I think it’s all about the feeling I try to show on it. It is fresh, passionate and all about my personal experiences. I try to show my readers the truth, whether they like it or not.

A blog is not only about telling opening times and prices for monuments. It has to be something else, and that’s what I try to strive for. I share both funny & sad stories from my travels. One of my favorites personal posts is one I wrote about all the people we met on our trip to Thailand and Cambodia. It’s always fun to have a record of all the weirdos or the cool guys you find on your way! Here it is!

What is your absolute favorite place in the world and why? What is your least favorite?

I think it’s very difficult to decide just one place, but if you were to give me a free ticket to any country that I have been to, I would definitely pick Iceland.

Iceland stole my heart. It’s magical, empty of people and full of nature.  It has the perfect landscapes and the unique beauty of the wilderness.

Can you share a useful travel tip with my readers? Something that you have learned through your own travel experiences.

Just travel, look around, learn, face your fears… no matter what your budget is. Traveling is not only about flying abroad but getting to know your own country too.

What people, place & things inspire you?

I love positive, lively and passionate people who have great backgrounds and lots of things to share. For places, sometimes local people help to make it a perfect experience.

I love the smile and kindness of Asians, the open mind of Europeans and the rhythm and charm of Latins. Everywhere you go, if you really love traveling, you’ll find something interesting.

What is your overall favorite travel experience and why? Can you describe it for us?

I loved my trip to Norway last year. I made a dream come true when I got to see the northern lights, something that I had been hoping to see since I was 18 years old. Being on a snowy beach, in the northern fiords, with the sea, the sky and the boreal auroris is a perfect night!

Why do you continue to travel? What do you get out of it?

Why? I just love it. I thing about traveling every single day. I want to see the world, meet people, discover cultures and learn. That is what I get out of it. Traveling is like a drug and I don’t think I could stop it.

Backpack or suitcase and why? What is one essential thing that you pack on every trip?

Nowadays I am a backpacker. Sometimes it’s not about the budget you can afford but about the experiences you can live. Travelling as a backpacker makes me feel the places in a different way, contact local people, get to know a bit how they live.

I can also not leave home without my cell phone and my camera!

I want to thank Eva for participating in the interview series. My goal with these interviews is to show a different side of travel writing that we don’t often get in the miles & points space. This interview is a great example of that!

Have a great weekend and check out Eva’s blog!
